  • haha you're right, I've never been to any of those places

  • You've hit the nail on the head. I've not had a cx bike in a while and had mainly been riding my hardtail MTB recently so initially the lack of suspension fork took some mental adjustment, but over the course of this first ride the joy of cx starting flowing through my body again. It's a different thing to a good xc mtb ride but just as much fun. Can't wait to spend more time on it as I was thrashing about on it and grinning like a Cheshire cat by the end of the ride.

It rides just like a cx bike and whilst the heavier 2.25" mtb tyres are a little less snappy acceleration wise, once up to speed they're unstoppable. Think cx bike that you don't have to be quite so fussy about line choice. The extra traction and grip gives amazing confidence to just smash through the rutted techy sections. I think I'll let a little more air out the tyres next time out, but yeah TL;DR: it's a fucktonne of fun.

  • definitely the first time i've ever seen a power meter on a surly

  • Decided to pop some Cx tyres on my Straggler and take it for a breeze around the woods this morning. Apart from a stressful ride down the trails at Ashton Court a while back (a mountain bike it is not) it’s the first time I’ve taken it off road really. So much fun! I was impressed with how confident it let me feel across roots and big gravel. I’m really tempted to get some chunkier tyres (these are 35mm) but then I’m currently building up a hard tail mtb.

  • Recently I built up my 1x1 as a Tour Divide wannabe rig and taking it out for the first Bivi of 2019 after work tomorrow.

    Yes, it’s a yoga mat.

  • It's stressing me out that every bag on that is from a different brand

  • More mixy matchy than matchy matchy - granted!

  • Every time I see a 1x1 I regret selling mine. Must learn to store stuff. That straggler with big tyres looks mega

  • Yes! Mismatched bags = maximum customisation.
Digging the Tour Divide wannabe vibe

  • Just seen a straggler go past (Denmark hill) with what looked to be a pannier directly mounted to the fork with no rack. Anyone seen this kind of thing before?

  • Would have been a lowrider without the loop over the wheel surely?

  • Was only one pannier and other side of fork was definitely clear. Reckon you could saw down a low rider to the absolute minimum needed to hold on to?

  • Could be similar to something like this

Would be weird to have it one side only though.

  • Or

  • Trialing my set up on my Disc Trucker ahead of a Tour to Bergen in a few weeks...

  • This looks great.

Looks like you've packed a lot - how long is your tour?

  • 13 days wild camping. I can almost certainly ditch the frame bag.

  • Krampuss. Framebag was an ideal fit for the Mk1 Longitude in L but it fits well enough.

  • ...and a Krampuss 2, a.k.a. The RedPuss:

  • The mounting position of that headlight rustles my jimmies so bad.

  • Anyone know if there is going to be a new Straggler released any time soon? I am soon to take the plunge but am not sold on the current red paint, wondering if there's anything new incoming...

  • There is saying about Surlys.

"You don't buy a Surly for the paintjob"

  • Yeah just get it powder-coated again. I've had mine done 3 times now. The stock finish is just a powder-coat anyway I think
