    You can't be certain that they tightened their straps too much. If they stayed attached to the bike, you only know that they tightened them enough 😀
    There are two things which are fine, and one which will break your ankle. Staying attached to both pedals or releasing from both pedals are fine. Staying attached to just one pedal isn't.
    Current track (sprint) practice is to use polymer webbing straps over super stiff clipless, which keeps you attached on both sides even more effectively than the old leather straps and slot cleats.
