Is the drivetrain efficiency for a 1 speed coaster hub the same as a singlespeed freewheel?
Or does it drag more because of the clutch inside the hub.
My guess would be: it would be the same...

My Torpedo seems to spin for a long time-probably depends a lot on the quality of the hub/races/bearings.

Thanks
But I asking about extra resistance from the clutch mechanism when pedaling :)Does it feel draggy like an internal gear hub?

Hm, it might do that a bit. Just built up a SS bike with freewheel, so I'll be able to do a side by side.

Disclaimer: total speculation
Aside from the normal movement around the axle there's no internal moving parts (when you're pedalling) so should be pretty efficient no? Or at least not significantly less than a singlespeed?

yes Im thinking that too.
Still most internal gear hubs in the direct drive gear lack behind a singlespeed setup. But that could be because of components/bearings/more sealing and not because of the mechanism itself :) -

I got carried away and bought one of these on a whim because it was snazzy. Thanks for the suggestion anyway!

In the 70s I had a bike fitted with mudguards like these. Can anyone explain what they were actually for?

As far as I know they were the minimum length required by regulation, but I don't know which regulation. It may have been "Construction & Use", but more likely some purchase tax regulation. Purchase tax operated from 1940 to 1973 in the UK to discourage unnecessary consumption, initially as part of the war effort but later (until joining the EEC made it unlawful, being replaced by harmonised VAT regulations) as a protectionism tax applied selectively to goods categories dominated by imports. It might well have [speculation] classified cycles as "Utility" with mudguards (no tax) or "Luxury" for racing bikes without mudguards which would have been taxed.

Recommend someone in Bournemouth or London for relatively complicated zipper replacement on leather bag?

• #98571
Well that's as good an explanation as any :)

Wanna pm me? I have three (actually four) different sewing machines for doing this kinda thing.
Otherwise any cobbler will have a butcher’s.

While a snob might cobble it together for a florin, it's equally likely that he'll butcher it. For the sake of the extra tanner, take it to a saddler for half a crown.
