We had a diesel 9th gen civic for a few years, it was quite solid with a decent level of kit (although less so than our 7 years older 5-series). The driving position and noise at speed were awful though. Didn’t even have triangle exhausts.
It also felt heavy and had terrible visibility for it’s size...
Was the previous gen better?

Whether it was actually 'better' I don't know (and I've never driven one) but the previous generation was definitely a lot better received. The 8th generation was criticised for being heavier than the 7th (that's just modern cars really but the engines had no more power), for having inferior rear suspension and for rear visibility with dat ass, but personally I'd be out if there were no triangle exhausts involved!
Yes. Personally I couldn't be doing with a Type R - too revvy/noisy. The smart choice would be a post-2009 Type S GT 1.8 (with the panoramic roof, cruise control, dual zone air con and body coloured bumpers).
And not in beige - Milano red.
