• Two layers of Gorilla tape on a Kinlin XR22, tyre (Hutchinson Intensive) appears to get up to pressure but there's no telltale "pop" of seating in the rim. Doesn't hold at higher pressure, with air clearly escaping from the valve hole (no sealant yet). Deflates overnight and the bead works its way back into the rim channel.

Add more tape immediately, or give it a go with sealant?

  • The valve hole is too big

  • Possible over tightening of the valve and distorting the rubber grommet?

  • Rim tape probably have a split at the valve hole. I'd rather redo than risking sealant in and still having to replace with all the messy stuff.
Top tips for making the hole: use something round and ideally warm the tip, make the hole pushing your way carefully to avoid splitting the tape, put sealant or glue in the rubbery part before inserting the valve

  • Put some fucking sealant in it!
