  • I used to prefer the fat seventies headstocks and chunky writing on strats when I were a youth...much keener on the 60s style now.

If I hadn’t gone burst crazy, I would have gone for a fat necked, 50s tele blackguard. Love ‘em.

  • I'm stalled on the Jaguar set-up mainly because of having no time and because the owner's away for two weeks so the urgency isn't there.

Because the previous botcher left the tab under the nut, they had to cut the nut slots deeper than normal, so now with the bottom of the nut properly radiused, the nut is too low. Can't decide whether to shim or to bin it off and start with a new one. doesn't need much in the way of raising. less than a mm i reckon. Superglue soaked paper?

Do you mean the two nuts either side of the floating bridge? If so they usually come with little cup-shaped shims which sit under the bridge to allow it to move backwards/forwards. Am I totally off base here?

  • Yep, the nut nut. Gone shim it I reckon

  • Totally gonna buy a Fender Tre-Verb when I get paid on Friday.

  • Damn, that is a pricey little pedal....quarter of a deluxe reverb reissue. Looks good though, nice to have the opto and bias trem. I love the bias trem sound.

....I might just be hopelessly behind the times on Pedal prices.... :)

  • Is it? £150 most places. WAit.. how must are DRRi’s now?

  • Damn, that's not bad! They're $270 over here new.

...caveat, I'm probably looking at the wrong thing.

  • Friends dad has asked me to look after this subtle number for the foreseeable... He hadn’t mentioned the size before dropping it off. Luckily it sounds ever bigger than it looks!

  • Nice. I used to have a TE 4x10” cab, I sold it before I damaged my back. Old TE stuff is ridiculously heavy.

  • This one isn't too bad (just bulky) but I don't have anything to compare it with at the moment. I remember my marshal 4x12 being heavier but it was also larger and more awkward. My old bass player is very amused as he tried to dump two TE cabs (1 4x10, 1 1x15) on me a while back but I refused!

  • Hehe. Nice. I'd love a bass amp at home. Can't really justify it though. Hence I've been looking at SF Bassman Heads that I can play guitar and bass through.

  • Finished the Jag set up this morning. Stuck masking tape on the bottom of the nut, trimmed it with an exacto knife, soaked in #1 superglue, left to dry then trimmed again and fitted. Perfect. Everything else fettled off and now it plays perfectly in tune all over the neck

My mate and his 12 year old who's learning on it messaged me to say it's like a new guitar. *proud

  • Hendrix at Woodstock is on the iplayer at the mo. I'd never seen it before. Gig looks like the aftermath of a medieval battle. The band are gash and he looks kind of pissed off for quite a lot of it. Weird that something so iconic looks so shit in close up.

  • Good skills!

I stained my neck last night - somewhat nerve wracking. I’m pretty happy that I got an even colour but need some day light today to see if it needs to be darker. I hit the test piece with a couple of layers of tru oil before I went to bed and that seemed to get things where I want....fingers crossed.

  • He was supposed to close the festival at 8pm on Sunday but didn't up playing until 8am after half the people had left. Bummer.

  • With 3 light coats of tru oil. Think I’m pretty happy...could’ve been darker but it will darken up over time and I hate when they get all orange. Just needs a lot more coats and polishing now.

  • Oh - and for anyone using those Colortone dyes, rubber gloves! I got a bit on my fingers and now look like a forty a day smoker.

  • Lovely looking colour on that neck, well done!

Are there any ukulele aficionados amongst us?

How do I know which one to go for? I've messed around with super cheap "toy" ones before but thinking a nicer one would be a nice thing to have...

Tenor or Concert? (I've narrowed it down to these two as I'm harbouring a plan to wait until I can find a cheap used Collings one as I've seen them go for around $900-ish, contingent on flogging my 8-string which I just haven't given as much attention to as I'd hoped...)

  • I know all the folklore and had seen plenty of clips before. Just hadn’t seen the full HD gig.

  • So this little green dude arrived today. It’s a Frantone Cream Puff clone, and I love it already. I’ve been looking for the right fuzz since I realised my Big Muff was never going to play nicely with the AC15, and this is probably it - it’s astonishingly good with the amp.

    Sounds like this
    (solo from 0:50)

Doubt I’ll be keeping it, as I really want to find an original Frantone pedal now.

  • This reminds me. Pedalboards...

I now have 5-6 pedals and it's not as easy to use as when I had one or two. Things get jumbled, it's a struggle to get them all plugged in to the power adapter thingy I've got as the leads are short and it looks really messy.

Is there an all-in-one thing I can get that'll keep them tidy and power them? Something that doesn't look dreadful?

  • You can see my T-Rex Fuel Tank Jr in the photo above. I’d strongly recommend it. There are cheaper power bricks, but try and get one with isolated outputs to reduce noise to a minimum.

As for pedalboards, the Pedaltrain Metro 20 is good for 5-6 pedals (also in photo).

Please don’t take the messiness of my board as indicative, it’s not properly set up at the moment, and you can get them looking very neat indeed with careful use of cable ties.

  • I thought I'd done a super neat job on my pedalboard 'til a mate took all his bits to another mate to put together... So professional, such cable management, DYMO LABELS!!! Made mine look AWFUL!!
