... and the fucking jokers still want £500RRP for a 1030, so with their offer of 30% off an upgrade it's still a £350 new unit to replace a functional 1000.

36EUR for a plastic button?

Fuck that. The £1 pen I'm currently using to turn it on is working fine.

For almost the same price you can get a whole case back with battery:

Get a Wahoo instead?
@GoatandTricycle did you have any issues with yours on TCR7?

Anyone got a 3D printer...

Everyone says that and I have to keep explaining that Wahoos are no good for what I do. If Wahoo worked for me do you really think I'd keep giving Garmin money?
Also, my point is mostly the waste of binning a perfectly functional product because of a simple piece of rubber.

NL guys doing slightly cheaper replacement:

Why doesn’t Wahoo work for you?
-
• #4813
I need on the fly route changes, navigating to postcodes, etc.
This question comes up every race and as much as I hate Garmin, they're still better for how I work.
-
• #4814
I’m pretty sure you can navigate to a postcode.
On the fly route changing isn’t great but how often do you really use that?
That said it’s a very stable device, I’ve only had to reset it once in 2 years. I think it’s intuitive and easy setting it up. -

On the fly route changes is fine with a network connection. Impossible without.
However, I think there's a new Wahoo out that does this (in theory). The Roam or Explorer or something.

Definitely does postcode via the phone/app.

• #4817
could you Sugru the pen bit in place a bit like this..?
-
• #4818
I’m pretty sure you can navigate to a postcode.
Maybe that changed since I was thinking about moving 3yrs ago.
I reroute quite often - it's a hazard of being a shithouse route planner with no interest in staring at maps for hours on end.

So two points of failure if you need that. I don't want to be pulling my phone out just to hit a postcode. I like being able to tap in the postcode on the Garmin and just go there.

Yeah a combo of stick/dowel and sugru is probably what I'll try if I get sick of stabbing it with a pen. Since I use the 1030 now this unit is basically retired for turbo use so waterproofing isn't a big deal. Just bloody annoyed Garmin don't do spares for common failure modes like this.

Obviously there is no super device as everyone would have it. I’m not proclaiming Wahoo is faultless or perfect.
However it’s stability and so far reliability are far superior to the woes I had with Garmin -

I've used this Garmin 1000 to cross Europe 3x and the USA twice so I can't fault it too much.
It's the planned obsolescence of expensive electronics I dislike the most. It's not-really-waterproof SD slot is up there though.

Yeah, they're the ones I was comparing in price to the £40 plastic switch. I'm not too keen on (presumably, it doesn't say Genuine) copied parts from China. They never arrive looking like the photos, they never fit properly, etc.

Having exactly the same problem (again). My first unit was replaced by Garmin for €80 (refurbished edge 1000).
Currently their offer is a new 1030 for €220. It is not possible to have a replacement edge 1000 as they do not receive refurbished 1000 units anymore.I’ve requested a 830 instead of an 1030 as replacement, strangle enough the replacement fee remains €220.....
I can see other "for parts or repairs" units on ebay with the power button blown out like mine so it's clearly shitty durability rubber used on their units. It's well out of warranty but I still hate the fact a few hundred quid worth of perfectly functional electronics is basically now useless.
