Getting a bit sick of my 520 after an ever-declining battery life and then randomly turning off a couple of times during my last ride. It doesn't seem to like recording when attached to an external battery source, which isn't a problem I can find anywhere else on the internet. And finally the tiny memory means replacing the mapping region on the SD card is tedious.
In terms of a replacement my priorities are:
- Good battery life. I'd like to be able to navigate 100 mile+ routes without having to worry about being on the nav screen, but also all-day affairs for longer tours
- Picks up external sensors without serious detriment to the battery
- Not enormous. Don't really want to strap a smartphone wannabe to my bars
- Simple interface and software that doesn't crumble the minute you look at it
- Wireless syncing: adding routes uploading rides without having to attach a cable
- Doesn't need to do the whole 'smart routing' thing. All I need is a breadcrumb trail that I have pre-plotted, ideally with turn guidance
Obvious candidate to me was the Element Bolt or Roam. Any others to consider?
- Good battery life. I'd like to be able to navigate 100 mile+ routes without having to worry about being on the nav screen, but also all-day affairs for longer tours

I reckon the new 530 may be a decent shout. I’d be going for it excepting my 6 week old 520 plus.

Be interested to hear your final decision on new elemnt or 530. I've got a wahoo which I like although it's due replacing soon, but the 530 seems to do more... Question is will I regret it if it "goes Garmin" on me and fails?

Looking for some help with my 520 Plus. How can I add locations? I can save current location but want to add my overnight stays for a forthcoming trip.
-

For myself I would create them on basecamp as waypoints/poi/location and export them all as a single gpx file to your garmin.
Alternatively create a placemark in google earth export as kml, convert using gpsvizualizer as gpx.Or create them here, http://gpx-poi.com/

Many thanks i’ll give these a try.
As a workaround I have created a 200 metre route which goes past each poi, I can then load the course and navigate to start. But the above will be much more scaleable and I think there is a limit to the number of routes I can link to Strava from my Garmin. -

There is a method to do this on your garmin but you need to know the lat and long coordinates. Create a location at your current position, save and then edit. This gives you this screen to manually enter the coordinates.

Great. And I see I can get the coordinates from google maps by dropping a pin.

Can you get an etrex 20 to like, track your ride in a way that provides a thingy to upload to strava?

My Fenix 5+ has a habit of showing distances way shorter than it should
My last few commutes, for example, show as 20+ km on my Edge 810, but 15km on my Fenix, amd the distance doesn't update as I look at the watch (cf. the Edge, which does)
The tcx track on connect / strava looks fine (albeit with too few km)
Is it broken / will it explode / will I explode?

Yes, you can get it to save your current track as either a gpx file, a fit file or both. Either of which can be uploaded to strava.
Correction on the etrex it is gpx only , on the Oregon it is gpx or fit. -

My Garmin 800 got a bit wet whilst out on a two hour ride the other day, and is now displaying the message "xn receiver not supported". I tried drying it out as best as possible, and left it off for quite a while. If I connect it to power it will charge, and the device still functions in terms of recording distance etc and working with GPS, but it is now no longer recognised when I attach it to a computer for uploading rides to strava. Anyone here have any experience of this?

Jiggle it, just a little bit.
I've used a pin to scrape oxidisation off the connectors. Be very careful.

My 1000 has just done this. I guess Garmin may service them?

If someone has formatted their fenix watch when connecting it to their phone, is it fucked or do i just garmin express it?
-

My fenix has completely crapped out. Any ideas?
It will load to the garmin screen and then goes blank.
Plugging it into my PC I get the noise to say a connection has been made but then nothing beyond that.Completely stumped. Also pissed off as I've not even had it a year...

Under warranty with Garmin, or bought 2nd hand? Garmin pretty good at a straight exchange in my experience
-
• #4795
Brand new. I don't have a receipt however!
-
• #4796
That's fine it's the serial number they will be after. I think the process is that you send the support team an email and then they call you back in a few days

Send Garmin photo of my broken power button and they ask me to send them a photo of the broken power button... le sigh

"We do not repair here in Garmin. We only replace the device. As per the pictures, your device needs to be replaced.
Based on the information you have provided we will need to book your Garmin device in for a replacement. As your device is out of warranty (purchased more than 24 months ago), we can offer to replace your device for a fixed replacement cost of £195.60."

Anyone ever swapped a case on a Garmin 1000?
Thinking I could buy a "for parts" unit off ebay and swap out the internals?Fucking hate this disposable electronics bullshit.

That was the response I got, if you phone them you might have more luck convincing them to replace it, it sounds like a pretty common problem/ issue with their design?
Using this method is also a bit more battery friendly
