The backstop is a symbol for raging brexiters...it means Britain no longer rules the waves.
It's a temper tantrum. Usually nothing good comes of those.
As for the public, cha depends. The BBC has ran articles on it, but I dare not read the S°n, Daily Hail, Terrible graph...

unhinged, frothing at the mouth because the EU agreed to the terms OUR ELECTED PM ASKED FOR WITHOUT FIRST GETTING CONSENSUS and have the bare faced cheek to continue to expect these to be met EVEN THOUGH WE ARE REFUSING TO RE-CONSULT THE ELECTORATE.
MADNESS IN CAPITALS

But unless Corbyn can show he can command support from a decent number of Tories, then their position is fair
Corbyn can't even command support from the majority of MPs in his own party. Most of them would get rid of him if they possibly could, and I'm pretty sure a fair few would refuse to back him as PM.

I'm surprised that the plan to end "free movement" for EU nationals the day after a no deal Brexit has not caused more fuss. Are the Tories really planning to cut off their ready supply of au-pairs, cleaners and low paid slaves at a stroke? Is this a real policy option or just a blackmail threat as part of their negotiating strategy with the EU?
Details here
https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/end-of-free-movement-after-no-deal-brexit-risks-another-windrush-scandal-ttp0s03twA Home Office spokesman said that the paper did not reflect current government thinking and insisted that free movement would come to an end on the day that Britain leaves the EU. Priti Patel, the home secretary, is drawing up a new option for ending free movement on October 31.
and
The Times has been told that Dominic Cummings, Mr Johnson’s most senior adviser, wants to announce an immediate end to free movement after October 31, whether Britain leaves with or without a deal.

ESP those labour MPs facing mandatory deselection as a result of Corbyn’s policies. What do they have to lose?
-
• #22559
It's fairly transparently their lack of imagination at play--they're basically trying exactly the same stupid nonsense as May, only trying to be more menacing. It won't work.

It’s a hostage taking gambit- they’re promising to make life incredibly tough for EU citizens/deport them unless the EU backs down.

Problem with such ideas is that there's no good way to distinguish between people with settled status and those that don't have it, the border personal is not there...so it won't work.
But despite all the signaling, if they do try to do this you just have to hope you don't get a nasty grumpy person at the border trying to go back home...
Lots of EU nationals are already very worried and the government arseholery just continues...

I’m sure Patel will have an entirely new visa system fully operational in 12 weeks.

How the fuck are they physically going get them out the country, days after a no deal brexit?

You need to believe more, Oliver.

Since the UK will be out of food, fuel and medicines, why would EU citizens want to stay? Surely thy would be better off mining the channel and watching how plucky the British spirit is when it can’t generate enough electricity to power a phone long enough for a canabalistic millennial to photograph their siblings before lunch.

I m sure they’ll have no problem rounding them up. Planes won’t be able to land, trucks won’t make it across the channel and who is going to let the ships dock?
Turn the IoW into a Nairu(sp?)? The cunts want an Aussie immigration system

I'm surprised there has been no chat on what happens for UK passport holders wanting to travel to the EU! Our freedom of movement is being ended but no-one is saying that or asking the questions.
-
• #22570
That’s because we chose to end our freedom of movement, so we get what we voted for.

Entering other EU countries, passing 'Help' notes to the guy at passport control....

No UK passport then no ration book, no ration book then no food or medicines.

Not everyone can go, cos you need a job under freedom of movement, family reasons etc can keep you here (hi...)
But fewer EU nationals are coming, and some are leaving.
So non EU nationals pick up the slack and get charged through the teeth for visa (that part of givery now is profit making), NHS surcharges... it's all about money and feeling superior for Priti and co

Be interesting to see at what point the pound depreciation plus austerity and economic contraction drops us from consideration for inward immigration of the type that the UK economy depends upon (doctors/nurses/vets/carers/etc).

That'll take about 6 months. 3 months after we get our first ration books.
Yup. Batshit fucking crazy mate.
I'm with Sid Vicious on this when he said 'I've met the man in the street.....he's a cunt'
