Rock Lobster CX Team TIG

  • Long time lurker, first time poster.

So after quite some time it was finally time for a new bike as I had been wanting to start getting into some light CX / gravel riding / bike packing for some time now. Having relocated to the Bay Area for work last year I really wanted something local where I could work with the builder face-to-face. I have been a fan of Rock Lobster's sea foam green team bikes for quite some time and after a bit of research and a quick call to Paul, I knew he was the one. Paul has been building bikes longer than I have been alive, he is a cornerstone of the west coast CX scene and he very much believes in function over form.

Back in February I made the short drive down to Santa Cruz to discus the build and my preferences with Paul. Steel frame, disc brakes, internal rear brake routing, room for 40mm tires and Syntace thru axle dropouts were all on the top of my list. In went my deposit and my name went up on to Paul's wait list. 3 months later I get a message from Paul and after a bit of back-and-forth between Paul, myself and my fitter, we had the geometry nailed down. Less than a week later while I was off on holiday in Barcelona I received the initial photo of my nearly complete frame (not the best photo, but you get the idea). More to follow...

  • That look absolutely fab!

  • Very nice! I hope it gets a cool flashy paintjob!

  • Update. After a few back and forths due to the painter getting the decal placement wrong I picked up the frame set last weekend. I wasn’t quite sure how the design would come out, but absolutely love it in person .

  • Love the frame and the paint job, hate to be this guy but better you hear it now rather than after you build it up.

It’s early morning here but I’m pretty certain the decals on the seat tube are back to front, should read from bb up.

  • While I noticed that too and thought it was off, every other Rock Lobster is done exactly the same way. Right or wrong, that’s just how he does it.

  • Glad to hear that! The only rock lobsters I found in my brief google were either drive side photo or mtb frames with no ST decals.

I’ve always lusted after a RL

What’s the plans for the build? Chris King/Enve/SRAM?

  • Additional photos and descriptions to follow, but a mix Chris King and Easton to compliment the Force 1 group. Still undecided on a stem and seatpost combo as I’m debating polishes silver vs black anondizing, but I’ll deal with that once I dial in my fit.

  • Coming soon to the @theradavist
