We took over a half plot (here in Glasgow) in late May, and it was a complete tip - couch grass waist high and convovulus coming in from the edges. Plus one of the neighbours has taken the wooden structure from the raised beds so it's all slumping. Got rhubarb, lavendar and strawberries in and a couple of tomato plants, but relentless weeding was disheartening so we've just put the raised beds under membrane and we'll leave it til spring.
That looks like a very sensible plan. I'm in the same boat but with more nettles, brambles and bindweed. I'll dig out what I need to put in a few raised beds with the wood I have and then basically do the same and get some manure/compost on there over the autumn winter.
