  • I'm going to work from home with @youramericanlover , as I'll no longer be able to stalk him on Strava

  • Though I'd assume he was just doing more laps of Regent's Park

  • Yeah, as lame as it is I leave mine non-private for these reasons too

  • I keep my bike commutes private so as not to spam folks - yesterday had a feeling I'd be top 10 on a small & little used segment both ways so made the rides public for a bit to check, then private again once confirmed.

    /csb #iamstravawanker

The algorithm thing means I don't check folks training & give kudos so much now either.

  • I discovered that there are Strava segments for anti clockwise laps of the Inner Circle of Regents Park in the following quantities:

    1
    3
    5
    10
    30
    50

Took me a whole afternoon to find out that there wasn’t a segment for 100 laps. If I was more technically minded there might be and I might have a KOM.

  • Genuinely curious, is the sense of achievement from the barrage of mileage/elevation/whatever challenges significant?

All you get is a digital noddy badge for most of them.

  • You really rode 100 laps? Isn't that 100 km?

  • Exploring Kent Downs and bagging hill climb KOMs is exactly what I use it for, and logging training. I’ve discovered live segments are an excellent way to nail outdoor intervals without a power meter.

  • Re: private v. public, I just set my rides to upload as private by default then make public the ones I want to share. This is an easy way to record all the things without boring people and yes there's no excuse.

Generally Strava annoys me more now than it did, but that might just be because I'm getting older.

  • You really rode 100 laps? Isn't that 100 km?

100 laps is 101 km. I rode 102 km so probs 101 laps, just to make sure I had got the 100. I hit two 50 lap segments so I must have.

Doing it fixed added an extra dimension.

  • The fact that my "intervals" happen to be up slightly less-well-known climbs (that Isaac Mundy hasn't found yet) and are all around 4 mins, which happens to be the peak of my power curve... is total coincidence.

  • I'm thinking about this now. I thought private rides didn't count towards yearly totals, but they do (this is good news). My commutes are flat, so elevation challenges aren't contributed to, and I don't ride enough really to get close to the distance challenges for a month.
I guess it stemmed from undergrad when every commute was a game, my housemate and I would actively try and beat each other just about every day.

I do like the challenges generally though yeah, it gamifies the whole thing a little. I don't look at others' 'trophy cabinets' and would be surprised if anyone looks at mine, but I like getting the gran fondo badge, or 10k or whatever.

    HOWEVER

While this is fair enough, it's up to someone to follow/unfollow me if their annoyed by my commutes, not up to me to tailor what I do for their pleasure.

  • That yearly distance revelation though, I'm thinking about private by default now, with a @rhb style check and public if I've any suspicions about a good segment

Yeah this is the key bit I think and why it annoys me that Strava doesn't allow you to filter others commutes from your feed. It's silly getting annoyed at people strava-ing their commutes when they're just using a feature of the app. It's fair enough to be annoyed by your feed being full of them and not being able to filter them out.

  • Lolz. A wild 'lunch ride' appears. Short day was it?

I'd be all for a filter, it would make so much sense. On the 'my activities' page, you can filter to view ONLY your commutes. Why.

  • It's not too hard to add a segment. I created one or two for little bits of routes that I do regularly. Go on the desktop website and on the activity and then if you click the three dots in bottom of the left hand menu it's got a "Create Segment" option

  • Thanks. Will try.

  • An impressively tedious ride, at least to me. I once did 100 laps of Herne Hill but that's only about 45km.

  • I have ambitions to go further.

  • You're one of the only reasons I've not let go yet, even with the Zwift which is saying something

Because I value your feedback, I'm now posting all turbo trainer related drudgery as private

  • can you mute athletes yet ?

  • All my rides are now private by default, progress

  • Search for Stravini as an extension. It let's you filter your activity feed afaik.
