I've a buddy that builds bikes out here and he reckons they are a right pain in the arse.

I imagine they're at their best when you a building a custom loom from scratch, and using their (or similar) momentary switches. that video does make them seem like the solution to all electrical problems ever

That sounds ominous! To be honest there's a part of me that's strongly considering keeping the engine, gearbox and electronics and swapping them into an Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite, mid-mounted with a supercharger and part out the rest of the bike... that or I'll sell it.

Believe that the zx9r engine fits the zx7r and was a common upgrade.
Part of me thinks that the smart roadster is a modern version of the frog eye.

Not as straightforward as you think but eminently do-able. I remember Hag Hughes built one for Fast Bike’s back in the day as a Blade Eater. Why Kwak never did, I don’t know....

Stateside, but a pretty smashing deal on a 904cc air-cooled Thruxton: https://www.triumphrat.net/triumph-motorcycles-for-sale-wanted-usa-canada/957592-2009-thruxton-5500-boise-idaho.html
(obvs £/$ makes a less good deal than it would have been)

Not as straight forward but lots of info on the internet on what to do makes it easier.

Got a new rear tyre, horrible. Almost worse than my last square one.
Its a k60 so fairly nobbly, great in damp sand, grass and chunky gravel, but in fine gravel (forest road stuff) and on tarmac its a liability. Might be something to do with width/profile compared to the rim. Its a 4" DID rim (I think) with a 5.1" tyre on it (130mm/80% approx), so as factory recommends, but the body of the rear tyre just sits flat and then falls away very steeply. So as you enter a corner it tips in fast, and then just falls to nothing no support. Maybe should go up a size which might force the tyre into a more rounded shape?
Might also have a swing arm problem, no play with arm or any pivot when on centre stand but I suspect it has some movement mid stroke, thing will stop wiggling down the road regardless of camber or how smooth, will have to drop shock out and have a wiggle (annoying as did all the bearings only a year ago).
Today ran without panniers and junk (30-40kg probably) but same tyre pressure (38psi in rear), so much better. Maybe these new tyres (tube type with a tube rather than tubeless with a tube) are much more supple in the sidewall, so need another 5 psi in them, they are no PS4's but certainly better. -

DRZ400. No need to look any further. Bulletproof, eminently tunable, great handling.

With DR350-drz400 from memory there are a few versions, one more supermoto based so road tyre sizes while other are more offroad so off road tyre sizes. There are other suzuki road wheels that will fit, so can do both if you want.
Look at the yamaha ttr250 as they seem quite popular there is a 400 4 sproke off roader/supermoto with a wheel swap that I can't remember the letter but that was quite good.
Or go bmw/aprillia 650.

While exploring my new county i found a Honda dealer across the road from a Greggs behind the Tesco's i was ment to be visiting....
Nice sales peeps asked if i was looking for anything....
"getting any Cross-Cubs 110/125 in ?"
This moved to the recently shown 125 ADV scoot which is morphing into maybe 150/200 and a 300cc versions, the dealer thinks the UK might get the 300cc if it even gets made.
All depends on what job i get as a small bike might be easier and free parking if i have to commute into work.
Got the free bike papers and Honda catalogues to peruse at my leisure :) -

I have a well documented love for all those little Hondas. I'll have another a some point.

Had a hankering for a C90 for ages but haven't found one close by.
They are going 2k + now, ropey ones with MOT seem to command about 1kHad a look at a Trail 90 at auction a month ago but it was not plated (also sat in some Sprites & Midgets & MGB GT's)
Postie bikes are hard to find and not that cheap (Aussie postal service only so not many get here)
Honda bought out the Cross Cub 110 several years back but only for Asian markets.Still waiting to see whats happening with the new Italjet Dragster 200cc
If things pan out small bike/scoot will most likely be a PCX 125 -

The innova 110 is the Honda successor.
