    I do remember you recommending renting a proper scanner for an hour to get high quality scans of selected negatives. Is this something one might be able to do with almost zero scanning experience? Every price I've seen for individual scans of negatives is £3 a frame

    Yes, you can do that with no experience save 10 minutes reading some instructions. You want to hire an Imacon Flextight, models 848/949/X1/X5. One hour should cost around £30, in which time you can do 30 large scans. You can hire them at Rapid Eye, Pro Centre (East), and Photofusion (South). Remember to bring your own hard drive.
