Fishing

  • I have the body of a 20 year old.

It's under the 12 tons of concrete I laid today.

Wait for a wind off your left shoulder for fly casting, chest waders help for mega extended casting range.

  • Chest wader at Dungeness equal sudden death as your on a ledged shingle beach with strong under tows and deep drop off's..... :)

Might get leg waders depending on nature of lakes, rivers in Shropshire where i am off too. For now sticking with wellies and close to shore :)

  • Been flicking through the mags in the air conditioned Tescos for 20 mins as cooler in there than at home (33 0c)

So whitehouse and mortimer gone fishing is back on primetime very very soon :)

Angling mail has a bright orange rig wallet as a freebie and Improve your Coarse fishing has a free waggler float and how to use one guide (@jambon ) no fly fishing mags and Sea angler was all about sharks (don't want one)

May have an early raid in morning and attempt to float fish with a 13' beachcaster..... just because

Although won't have insta models posing on the beach early.

  • Stack of stuffs gone to new this morning.

  • Can't hide bodies in lakes now as 32 kilos of lead has gone.

Fella turned up on route to go fishing with a car full of gear and bought even more.... :)

Removal company will be happy as they don't have to hump lead about now.

  • How to set float balance at home.

Was going to try and float out a mackerel trace and let the current take it.

I need to rig up with the 5 hook trace, and find the right weight lead ball to hang off the end.
Coiled everything up and hung under the float and dunked it in the rain water barrel. got it pretty much spot on first go.

Just got to tie up nicely with some braided line, set the hooks a couple of feet under water so they glint in the sun lit sea and maybe catch something.

  • Interesting concept, movement is the key to catching mack and this would hang like grubby washing on a soggy Wednesday. Mackerel are mind-buggeringly keen to commit mackicide, but not quite that keen.

  • Heard tales of "if you lobbed a safety pin on a bit of string over the side you would catch" :)

Guessing if you hit a shoal anything would work.

If i lob out, let the tide take it then reel in.... might work...

  • assuming everyone's already see this, but if not it's fucking brilliant

Pretty much why I got into fishing

  • Do you need a license if you're not using a rod? Touring Scotland this month and thinking about taking the bare essentials... line, hook, float, bait etc

  • Only if you get caught.

Owners of fishing rights are likely to be more of a problem.

  • Good point. I have a license but like the idea of seeing what I could catch in Loch Ness, Lochy and Oich, I'll have my bike so can easily pedal away!

  • From a shotgun?

Actually, there used to be good public access to all of those. Get yourself a cheap multi section travel rod from Fleabay, I have one that packs to about 16" that has failed to catch fish on multiple continents.

  • Scotland is no rod licence required. You do need land owners permission in writing or a day licence.
    Unless it's public access.
Google where your heading too about fishing rights and access.
The day - week permits tend to be sold via the local shop/newsagent/post office or direct from estate offices and a lot of hotels have private access waters for a day fee.

  • @ColinTheBald my John Wilson Avon rod is actually the 5 piece travel version, but don't really want to carry that around for 10 days, also means I'll want to pack reel etc. Those telescopic rods do look really useful though for future, good shout. Encouraging to hear about the good public access.

@853Superfly will do some googling and see what's suggested for permission. Should be interesting plumbing the depth of Loch Ness when I've only been fishing once before and that was 4ft deep! Useful info regarding permits too, will investigate the places we're staying. Thanks a lot guys.

  • 3rd time fishing, 2nd fish caught. This roach is bigger than the last, but apologies if it's still small fry.

  • It was this big

    <------------------------------------------------------------------------>

  • Only fish i have caught are in Tescos.

  • ...this is fly fishing though? My fishing knowledge is very small (if nonexistent) but sounds pretty complicated to me!

  • I still think a flash-bang would be more relaxing and productive. Police have other ideas on that :)

Carp pond round the back of the old address (no fishing) was easy, a slice of bread and net, quite certain the eastern euros in the area don't know about the pond otherwise it would be stripped clean of fish.

Joys (stress) of moving house, now in flyfishing pondlakeriver central up in Shropshire, so will have to see where i can go......

  • I used to fish in the Severn in the centre of Shrewsbury. Some good fish there, including the biggest pike I ever caught - one passing family asked if it was a whale. All very coarse though.

  • Whitehouse and Mortimer is good TV

  • Is the new series running now ?

  • Never thought I'd like it as much as I do, it's so serene
