  • I'm planning on building some venetian fencing including a gate and was looking at red cedar. How have you finished the screw tops? filler?

  • Plugs cut on a pillar drill with this. The cedar was too soft to cut plugs from so I used a bit of Douglas fir. I'd be inclined to go with larch for a gate, the cedar is very soft.

    The larch is cheaper too and has a nice mix of tones, which I quite like.

  • Hi, this plug cutting idea is great. Thanks for sharing that. I like making small gifts from wood so this would be ideal for me to get a better finish. Also, it made me think, my mate has a fab shop and he makes a lot of steel racking for shops. I wonder if there is a machine that allows metal to be cut and used as a plug? Or maybe if the screws were drilled deeper, they could be filled with a silver resin to cover the screws?
