Plugs cut on a pillar drill with this. The cedar was too soft to cut plugs from so I used a bit of Douglas fir. I'd be inclined to go with larch for a gate, the cedar is very soft.
As a colour ref, I made these from western red cedar finished in Osmo UV. Quite red (good), but a bit more glossy than I’d like. I think because you don’t bother wiping off the excess - like when finishing furniture - it builds up a more satin / gloss layer. Rain beads right off though.
If I did it again, I’d obvs go for LOOK cladding. Got the cedar form Southgate Timber if you do go down the non-branded route though.
