  • Cheers, I should have left the guards on though. I took them off to give more clearance for gravel etc but should have just ran them a bit gappy for the trip.

  • The problem with front panniers is you need two, you can't just ride to work with one pannier containing a jacket, shoes and some lunch because your bike will veer horribly to one side

Handling with one pannier is fine on my Troll

  • Can we all just take a moment to sit back and blame @Amey for the last page of pointless argument about whether panniers have any place on a bike in the age of bikepacking

  • I used to commute to the shop with just one front pannier, had fuck all in it though!

  • Where do you guys carry a tent on your rackless setups? I usually carry the sleeping bag and tent on this front rack but looking for a way to transition to just bags... any ideas?

  • Poles under the toptube fixed with Velcro straps. Tent in a saddle bag. Pegs went in my bar bag to give it some rigidity whilst riding.

  • My tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag and liner all comfortably fit in the Carradice saddlebag on my Surly on the previous page. I do have a small tent though...

  • My usual set up is restrap bar bag and frame bag, with a carradice at the back.

Distribution is usually tent in the Carradice, poles in the frame bag, sleeping bag and Matt shoved into the bar bag (I ditch the compression bag for the sleeping bag and just shove it as I find it fits the width of the dry bag better that way and I can compress it a bit with the dry bag).

Once I’ve got wider/more flared drops I might switch this up and go for tent up front and a more modern seat pack on the rear with the sleeping gear. Anything I need/want access to goes in frame bag or the little bag that attaches to the bar bag holster.

  • Just keep the rack

  • Keep the rack, it will ride a lot better stuff on there than in bags

  • Not sure if best thread but, anyone have rock solid advice on extinguishing a meths trangia? I always gingerly put the lid back on but the little shit just shrugs and keeps on burning away

  • Don't put it on gingerly, drop it on.

  • Lighter fluid. Fight fire with fire.

  • Ha. Aerosol flamethrower should put it in it's place.

A(nother) serious idea though: any reason a small wet towel wouldn't work?

  • Don't put it on gingerly, drop it on.

This is the correct answer. Also, remove the flame adjuster first.

  • Take the adjuster off, close it, drop it on. Better to use that piece because the lid's got an o-ring in it.

  • Oh yeah, never use the actual lid for snuffing the flame. Thought you were talking about the adjuster.

  • Neither seem to work for me. The lid would work I think, if I could get it turned into the thread even a tiny bit, but obviously it's all really hot around there.

  • Weird. You burning gasoline in there?

  • Methylated spirits. I remember not having this issue at scouts too.
I'll take another look at it anyway, thanks.

  • Is your burner due a clean? Could be some of the jets are blocked. When hot that can increase flow in the remaining jets and make it harder to extinguish (IME).

A good soak and scrub with descaler (citric acid) will do wonders to the burner.

  • Maybe, it did a few months tour a few years ago so that could be a great idea thanks

  • Or just build a fancy feast stove with integrated stand.

  • UK Methylated Spirit seems to have loads of impurities in it. If I use the French equivalent (alcool à brûler) it burns much cleaner and leaves minimal residue.

  • Bikepacking wheelies at the top of Tourmalet
