  • looks a bit close to the guards?

Design fault, they could have moved the bottle mount a little nearer to the BB, otherwise standard length bottle hit the guard.

Not too much of a problem, as I'll be going to the British Columbia with it without mudguard.

I imagine it'll feel well balanced loaded in crappy terrain.

Moreso climbing, the Pinnacle Arkose was a little bit twitchy in a steep gravel climb with 30/34.

  • Ah the second stay on the rear threw me off

  • Good grief there is some cobblers in this thread!

What's happened to ed's three other custom 650b bicycles again?

  • I'm not even that old!

  • Where did you source the Rampart from? Trying to decide in these or Horizons, with on triend tan sidewalls.

  • My advice, wait 6 months, let everyone else buy these (no doubt expensive) tyres and then when they casually drop in a separate thread that they are too lightweight, wear quickly, aren't good with tubeless, etc, you won't have wasted your money.

    Compass Bon Jon pass etc
    Gravel King
    Kojak

    All examples of the above.

Strangely I haven't been burned by these recommendations! It just sounds really familiar.

  • I'd wholeheartedly recommend Horizons. Have put around 3,500 miles on mine so far and they look like new. No punctures and hardly any cuts. They've gone over some horrendous Norwegian gravel roads in the rain and some really rocky paths, plus 6 months of London commuting.

  • plus 1 on horizons, I bought them lightly used on ebay and 3k+ miles later they are still going strong

  • Cheers, they also seem easier to source and cheaper which would be a win.

  • I am currently in the process of being burned by Gravel Kings. Again.

@pastry_bot speaks truth to industry power.

  • My first experience with them was grand, so I ignored everyone repeatedly saying how bad they were. Currently also getting burned with my second pair.

Suspicious of the hype around these teravail

  • Is the tyre fast? Then it is thin and will puncture more. Apparently only Conti GP 4S meet this magical actual toughness / fast criteria.

People conception of tyres and speed and toughtness is the same as "waterproof" jackets and breathe-ability: you just don't get to have both.

  • I’m going to put Specialized sawtooths back on before heading to the new forest soon. They’re not light but they are tough and grippy off tarmac.

  • Full price, I got Horizon but due to the fact they’re old tyres, some of them deep through the sidewalk, not a problem but it make it trickier to keep it inflated.

Went for Rampart, work straight away.

  • What's happened to ed's three other custom 650b bicycles again?

One is mine, the oak is to be sold and the tourer to my dad (both oak and tourer was pre-SMP, when I discovered I need a 74 degrees seat tube).

  • that's pretty bad. how many miles (and what type) are you putting on these to get that type of wear? I don't think I've ever worn a tyre through to that point - and I cycle a reasonable amount (c.4000mpa)

hope my gravel king SKs don't reach a similar fate

  • Too many skids, YAL. Back to Gatorskins for you ;-)

  • Ha! That was the second or third time I'd ridden them. These are the slick version of the gravel kings - and what UK gravel (aka old railway lines) do to them.

  • GKs are amazing tires on road and light gravel if you're prepared to deal with flats. Won't ever ride them with tubes

  • You had a puncture before we even got on the downs link!

  • All in all that is terrible review of a tyre :)

  • ohhhhh I've just realised - the white is sealant. I thought it was wear! d'oh

  • OMG who are you, Mr Perfect Chronology now?

Either way it's an even sicker burn on the tyres that I got a puncture before I even airfinger quote got on the downs link unairfinger quote

  • Horizon's are bomber. Pretty thick at the tread so crazy long mileage possible (esp. if you rotate front/rear infrequently). Sidewalls can be a bit fragile but I guess this it what gives them their supple ride characteristics.

I'm a couple of months on the new Gravelking+ and no problems. Added p*ncture protection seems to have answered previous Gravelking failings with minimal weight increase (approx. +40g vs. std) and no discernible detriment to the riding characteristics (still plenty fast and comfy).

  • It was before the downs link way and after you left me for dead on the very first bit of off road because i got scared

    but sick green tyres man
