  • The joke is that I’d planned to sell the auto flags, with the eta 2824-2 (or whatever it is) inside. Steel bracelet and everything.

Problem was that it got bashed and the crown/stem snapped. I need to get a new stem fitted and put it back together some time.

Would have sold it relatively cheap considering it’s a nice slim diver with Swiss movement inside.

Relegated to storage until it gets fixed.

  • Thanks to radar, Regal and inchpincher for their advice, definitely going for the Pelagos......

  • I'm looking for a nice automatic diver with a steel bracelet for maximum 500 pounds

It's not auto but its a proper certified diver - no idea what local pricing would be:

    There's also a Ti version.

Otherwise I really rate these ( a bit more utilitarian though)

  • Nice one. Here’s a pic of one next to a Black Bay from when I was flirting with getting a Tudor diver. The legibility and general sharpness of the Pelagos is so nice.

  • I've been away from home, wearing a Garmin Fenix for two weeks. I miss my watches.

  • I won’t lie, I’m a bit jealous.

101 uses for a dive bezel - putting your kid in time out, Le sigh

Ok guys, got a proper challenge on my hands here.

My dad bought himself a Rolex datejust approx 50 years ago in Hong Kong. A couple of years ago, he made the mistake of not pushing back the crown far enough before going for a swim somewhere in Croatia.

Goes without saying the watch didn’t really appreciate the combination and turned proper green as a result.

There’s no proof of purchase, no box or anything. He had it checked out by an official Rolex center back in the Netherlands and they confirmed both authenticity and quoted a price for a potential “repair” / overhaul that made him burst into tears.

Looking for some advice here and if possible a solution. Bracelet is not original but that less of a concern, main thing is to understand if and at what potential cost I could have this watch up and running again.

As you can imagine, being in his possession for so long, it holds a certain emotional value.

Open to possible UK, Dutch or Italian repair options. I live in Italy but I’m traveling to the UK quite often for work.

Cheers for any possible input / advice.

PS: will get some better images by tomorrow (pending dad’s iPhone skills)

  • Ye gods

  • Who’s that guy with the blog and does all the amazing resto stuff?

Puts step by step photos of all the servicing and whatever. Maybe someone like that?

I guess it ceases to be the same watch once you swap out the entire movement and the dial, but that’s what it needs to be anywhere half decent. Maybe a sympathetic third-party redial? This thing can’t ever be sold anyway.

  • Not looking to sell after obviously, I hope he gets to enjoy it as long as possible. It'll be more of an emotional value than an economic one. :)

  • Hurts doesn't it...

@MementoMori - it might be worth contacting him but he can't work miracles. That dial is dead and if the movement is anything like the dial, that's likely gone too.

  • I like your Glass Half Full attitude

  • That’s the one. Knew it was an obvious name. Just though he may not work a miracle but he might be able to do something less eye-watering.

Or send it to me and I’ll stick in a Miyota quartz movement and paint flags on the dial.

  • there's water in the glass

  • there's water in the crystal

  • Just felt like sharing this:

I finally found a suitable old Omega for my wifes 30th next month. She want's a bulls eye suverän, but this will have to do. According to serial number it's from (second half of) 1949, so exactly 40 years older than her, which is kinda fun.
Keeps time t about + 7.5 secs a day and I am testing power reserve now, currently at 30 h.

I made a strap and a case for it in the hope that she will put it in the case when not wearing it and thus not loose it too soon.

The case back had a hand scratched engraving that I decided to remove and try to restore something similar to the factory lathe marks underneath. Maybe not for the purists, but so be it.

Other than that I'd like to know your thoughts on condition and originality. i know the crown is a replacement and am looking into if I can change it myself if I can find the correct signed one.

  • Strap looks really chunky for the watch, but I’m used to much thinner leather for smaller dress watches. I like your de-engraving. Hopefully you didn’t take off too much metal.

  • You might be right, but I think it’s more the roughness of the finish than the chunkiness so hopefully it will be better when it’s smoothed out a bit with wear.

I feared the same so I was careful to remove as little as possible. The engraving was quite shallow and I stopped before the lowest couple of spots.

  • Here’s a better one. 😋🤦🏻‍♂️

Thanks for suggestions so far, I’ll check out the link this evening.
