  • A male cyclist has been seriously injured in a collision with a lorry. It happened at 9.20am this morning near the junction of Seymour St and Portman St in Westminster. It's been reported by CLOCS and Stop Killing Cyclists on Twitter, no more details yet. Fingers crossed for him.

  • Finger crossed :(

  • I work round the corner and saw the roads taped off at lunch. Lots of construction work going on. Really hope the rider is ok.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist suffered critical injuries following a collision with a lorry.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at around 09:50hrs on Wednesday, 30 May to reports of a collision between a lorry and cyclist on Seymour Street, at the junction with Portman Square, W1.

Officers attended along with the emergency services and found the injured 73-year-old cyclist. He was taken by LAS to a central London hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The 29-year-old male lorry driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drug driving and dangerous driving. He was taken to a central London police station where he was interviewed and released under investigation.

Detective Constable Alex Price, of the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This collision happened at a busy time of day in a heavily populated area. I am sure that a number of people will have witnessed the collision and I urge anyone who saw what happened but has not yet spoken with officers to come forward without delay."

Anyone with information is asked to call the SCIU at Merton Traffic Garage on 020 8543 5157 or by calling 101 quoting reference 188/30 May.

  • Horrible. Hope he pulls through.

Dependent on which end of Portman Square that is, I seem to recall the road surface is cracked and crumbled and pretty treacherous. But I've not been through for a few weeks.

  • Dreadful; good luck to the rider

  • This crash from May 30th is now being reported as a fatality.
    RIP John Wright.
Reported in yesterday's Standard article on the LCC protest ride:

In June, John Wright, 73, died in hospital five days after being hit by a lorry near Marble Arch.

This was also noted as 'died in hospital' in the Cycling Intelligence casualty database.

  • RIP John Wright. Tragic.
