Why knackered ones though?
I assume that means there won't be a chain turning them over -

Because you can bet that the smallest sprockets will be Ok, it'll be the bigger ones that are worn out.

Think you might have it the wrong way around.
The larger the cog the less work it does.

Yes, but who other than pros spend all day in the 11 or 12 sprocket?

If the cassette is worn the 11-15 will be the most worn in most cases, unless the chainring is far too big.
Also, the smaller sprockets are generally used under more load, not just spinning up hills...
If anyone has any old cassettes lying around gathering dust, I’m after some 14, 13, 12 and 11T sprockets. Would ideally like 11 as the smallest, but would settle for a 12.
