Oh my fucking god, do I seriously have to explain to you how sarcasm works? Here:
the use of remarks that clearly mean the opposite of what they say, made in order to hurt someone's feelings or to criticize something in a humorous way
"We lost a referendum because we're smarter than everyone else" = "if you're smarter than everyone else, shouldn't you have won the referendum?"
And the answer is no, because that's not how that works.
Are you seriously saying that you thought it was meant sarcastically but you're also taking it at face value as a serious statement?
