I'm trying to imagine what this does to the race dynamic but it's like everyone has to skip foreplay and go for a 60km ramp test... Does this favour Alaphillipe at least keeping podium? He cracked today but only near the summit c.80km in. But then... if everyone is going balls out from km zero then there'll be no break and no eyeballing of who forgot to refrigerate their blood bags.

This is all deeply unsatisfactory, I'd like to speak to the manager please.

I thought Bardet would have done Wellens in today but no... struggled again. Alaphillipe defending podium is more likely to be racing against Bora and Lotto-Thomas looked much stronger than him today. Could see Quintana getting psyched up to piss on Movistar's collective leadership chips tomorrow though-he likes them short and lumpy and in 60km he's not going to have time to pull back any real margin that would threaten the top three.

What would you propose they do instead?

I think tomorrow could be very exciting. no pissing about. strong men get up the road. have a feeling GC will stay as is. unless Kruisjwijk has been holding something back. would be nice if Ineos didn't take two of the podium places

Maybe they'll bring back the grid start...

Put a big mountain detour onto Sunday's stage and tell the riders all the conventions are out of the window.

Route now confirmed - they'll take the main road through Moutiers, which is a dump, then straight up the 33 km climb to Val Thorens. 59 kms in total.
