I was thinking you'd do all the measuring etc. beforehand (during the time where you can't be noisy).

Planning on re-varnishing a wooden framed double-glazed window at the weekend (casement). I'll scrape and sand the timber, but there are some small trim strips around the edge of the sealed units. Is it worth renovating these, or easier to just seek replacements? They appear to just be pinned into place.

Get a piece of pine that's a bit bigger than the hole and carve a sort of plug shape. Hammer it into the wall as if it were a frozen sausage. If you don't have pine you can use an ethically sourced shrunken head. That usually makes a decent wall plug once you drive a screw into it and it expands. If you've got unlucky and the brick is too weak in that area you could try chemical fixing.

All Forumengers should check their stock levels.
It's unlikely the maladroit, toolshy chancers in the dePfeffel Cabinet will think to include ethically sourced shrunken heads in any future trade deals. -

Sorry for the slow response, out of town!
I would’ve said that’s a little on the steep side - sounds to me like they’re quite slow but still charging a healthy hourly rate.
3 medium ceilings down to the picture rail isn’t a huge lot of work.
Unless they’ve factored in a top-spec artex clean-up system.
Instead of just scraping the nibs off with a trowel like most people do. -

Yep, their applications are boundless.

My shower is a bit leaky (2 bits but I imagine the same cause) how do I work out where it is coming from/fix it?
Also want to regrout so don’t mind if need needs to come apart quite a lot to fix.

The tap will come off and there will be a Thermostatic Mixer Valve inside.
Take it to a good plumbers merchant and replace it.

I assume I remove it with the 2 big bolts next to the wall... do I need to cut the water off before doing so?
-
• #17840
I've just replaced that, a new mixer tap off Amazon cost me £60 and I paid a bloke £80 to fit it.

There should be local 1/4 turn isolation valves on the hot and cold pipes somewhere. Is this a shower cubicle or a bath? If bath, take the panel off and look underneath. If shower... Well hopefully there is a hatch somewhere.
The head of the tap usually has a small screw holding it on. Undo it and it will reveal the top of the valve.
When the water is off (if you can't find/have no local isolation turn it off at the main stopcock) use an adjustable spanner / plumbers wrench to undo the valve. There will be a 'nut' built in to it.
Go to merchant, show it to them, get new one and reverse the above process.
Failing that get a plumber.

As Mr Sworld says it'll be the mixer valve. I sadly could find nowhere that had the same one as mine, there appear to be 1000s and bought a whole new part like Spindrift did, but fitted it myself without too much trouble

Halfway through an ikea hack built in bookcase. Still need to put doors on bottom half, skirting, coving, and mount tv on the wall in the middle. Planning to build a desk on at the end too.

Looks good, tv not too high?

Hi can you tell me what that paint is please (wall)
-
• #17848
Yeah might be higher than originally planned, but it's only a 32" so shouldn't be too noticeable

It's Craig & Rose French Turquoise.
That picture was in the dark - it looks a lot greener in daylight.

Have found a merchant who says they have one type of valve in stock. Screwfix next door so will get a whole new assembly if not compatible.
Also interested for solution as my coat hook rack came off a similarly crumbly plaster board.
Had no nailsed it.
