That plus the fact that there are people from the financial industry quoted as saying they've never come across his financial services as an actual thing. If he did provide them, they were certainly very elusive. Not that this proves anything, but it does point in the same direction.
Also, I don't think this really is in the realm of 'tinfoil hat' stuff - it's certainly just speculation, but it doesn't seem that implausible and it's not the same quality of 'conspiracy' as, say, "aliens are kept in Area 51".
The tin foil hat comes from the theory (posted somewhere upthread) that actually Epstein was nothing more than a highly successful blackmailer - the financial services element being a front for the payments. Given his list of 'clients' it's pretty quick to fill in the Hollywood trope style blanks. Whether it's true remains to be seen - but it certainly is more plausible than most internet conspiracy theories.
