• Thread dredge.

My friends have bought a house in Newquay 10 minutes from Fistral beach and subsequently got me into surfing. Last Saturday evening i was sat on my (foam!) surfboard drinking a beer watching the sun come down after 2 hours surfing. Life has changed as i know it.

Hopefully this will last longer then my brief foray into MTB'ing, any forumers sitting behind there desk watching beach webcams on magic-seaweed?

  • I remember that feeling well. I lived right next to Cayton Bay in the NE for a few years and was introduced to surfing then. I became obsessed. It didn't take me long to realise that it was just the being outside near the sea that I loved rather than the surfing itself and that I enjoyed having a few beers and a paddle just as much....

  • I've literally spent the last week trawling the internet for a nice mini-mal, something between 7'6" and 8'6", either new or secondhand. I'm an admittedly rubbish surfer but I couldn't agree more on the feeling of joy to be taken from floating on a board in the sea! I can't wait to get to the end of this annus horribilis of work stress and make some time to surf again.

Oddly I always compare mountain biking to surfing for people who haven't mountain biked but who do surf. I get the same feeling being in the mountains on a bike as on a board in the sea.
