strangely if I get a mate who is also a member on here to "discover" the gumtree link themselves and post it on here that's cool? (which wouldn't be on my behalf BTW)

If you've got your mate to "discover" it (which kinda reads as you tell him to)
It's hard to not think that's on your behalf

I think my point was what proof do we have that every post on here (past, present and future) that was "discovered" and link shared wasn't posted on a friends behalf.

it's a flawed rule. if folk can't post ads then they can't post ads full stop. why the other bit?

But mostly people do what you did and get called out for it, so I'm guessing it mostly works.

I just find it funny how there's a "don't press the red button" rule immediately followed by " but if you want to press the red button here is how you do it"

it's similar to "if you kill a deer driving your car you can't take it home and eat it. but the car behind you can"

"You can't post a link here, but someone else can post your link here".

why the extra bit at the end?

It's there because it works for the most part and as you have experienced, some members make sure to inform people of the rule.
It's a good way of not having a ton of admins policing the forum. And if people exploit the loophole then meh, good for you.

Although I bet others have stronger opinions than "good for you"
