I had a red 3 door GTi for a while and absolutely loved it. Some simple mods give decent power - if you can, go for an anniversary edition - 180bhp off the bat, ko3s turbo, easily remapped to 220, plus some great interior touches. Loads of fun to blast around in :)
Handling is not so great but some polybushes and coilovers also stiffen it up a bit.
