  • I was a DNF on the ECCA 100 on Sunday. I made it 30 miles but was off power, pace and my head wasn't in it. I finished the TAW just over a week ago and hoped I would have hit some mad form, but it was not to be.

  • To be fair, I took 2 weeks off doing nothing after italy, then hit big numbers.

  • Big numbers for how long?

I can race across the US and a week later outsprint the British track team but as soon as the duration goes up at decent power the legs aren't responding.

  • how can you predict the outcome of a race based on 3 miles?!

It felt like I was on for a 20.xx - At 3mi I was avg. 30mph and felt great.

  • I laughed when I read that!

4 years ago I did the ECCA 100 a week after a 12 hour. I felt good for about 20 miles, then I gradually felt worse and worse. I shold have stopped like you did but I made myself continue. It was hell, just about the worst I've felt on a bike. The 50 the following week wasn't great either.

The thing with recovery time is you don't know what it is until you test it and find it is longer than you thought. Then you know!

So not that long, but aerobic ability doesnt lie.

  • You have been blessed with a bigger engine than most of us though and perhaps the duration and bursty nature of ID weren't enough to grind you into ultra paste. I've PBd a 10mi after TCR but I've also blown spectacularly doing a 50mi after TABR. Generally I wouldn't bother with TTs after ultras.

  • I haven't done one in 2 years, sadly.

  • I'm amazed to find that this thread hasn't had a new post for nineteen days - and at the height of the season!

So here's a slightly unusual post to get things going again. I wouldn't normally write this sort of stuff here, but there are a couple of things which make it an exceptional story for me.

    Reading 25, 7th July

This event was won by James Cadman, (Hounslow & District Wheelers) in 53.23. , with David Triska (Team Bottrill) an admittedly close second in 53. 26 and Nic Stagg (Hounslow) third in 54.16.

It is a common and justified complaint that TT's are almost always won by a small coterie of specialists who rarely let anyone else get a look in, well this was a first open event victory for Cadman.
This is especially pleasing for the Hounslow since James is still a relative newcomer to the sport and is some one we have watched go from 'a bit promising' to 'pretty bloody good': we hope our encouragement has at least played a small part in this.

Another good feature is that the Hounslow won the team prize (Cadman, Stagg and Tim Budd, 58.09). I was especially pleased about this because only a couple of weeks previously I had pointed out to the guys that if they could enter events together they would stand a good chance of picking up team prizes. It's worth mentioning that when the Hounslow was in the highest league of TT clubs, we based this success, at least in part, by stressing the value of team prizes. The importance is that a team win gives encouragement to up and coming riders who cannot yet win scratch prizes, as well as being good for the morale of the riders' supporters within the club.

It's worth mentioning that both Tim and Nic post on this forum. There is another of Nic's exploits (on fixed this time) which he has asked me to report here - I shall do this later this evening.

  • My Shiv is gathering dust while I race across countries. I might rein in my ultra stuff next year and do some CTT events again.

Anyone want a Lg Bell Javelin or some Aerocoach armrests?

  • Updates in September 🙃

  • I'll get round to the 24 at some point

  • I’m going the opposite way (in both directions). Really enjoyed my first ultra and also really enjoyed road racing as early season training.

Bailing on the 100 mile means I won’t win my usual club BARR trophy by default, but I’m definitely less enthusiastic about TTs this season.

  • Also Marcin B just smashed the comp record for 100 with a 3:13

    That’s 10 x 19:22 10 miles back to back.

Also the men’s and mixed tandem comp records were broken. Amazing what Rachel is doing.

  • He came flying past me. It's not often I'm overtaken in a TT by someone who started over half an hour behind me.

  • I've still got some TT targets. Ultras are 'suffunering' aka Type 2 fun. Road racing I've had little interest in here.

  • Also Marcin B just smashed the comp record for 100 with a 3:13

    Faaaark.

  • What was the tandem time? Was it the guys who race in the world champ stripes I saw on Kimroy’s Facebook post?

  • I got confused, Rachael Elliott broke the tandem 30 comp record with a 57:19.

Becky and Howard Lewis - 3:32:02 in the 100
Adam Duggleby and Darren Yarwood - 3:17:51 in the 100

The day before Adam Duggleby and Steve Bate set a new 50 Miles Men's Tandem Comp Record of 1.28.23 on the A50/6

  • Also Marcin B just smashed the comp record for 100 with a 3:13

And on disc brakes too! 🤣

  • On the new Aerocoach wheels too ;)

  • That's 50kph average. For over three hours.

Cofidis came last in the TTT in this year's tour with an average of 50.5kph. That's eight people for less than 45 mins.

  • I wonder how many centuries I have to wait for the aero tech to be available that allows me to go that fast?
