Thomson has a whole pile of prototypes that never made it to production for one reason or another - often because they can't be produced to the standards he's looking for.

What standards? Let's be real for a moment: the majority of Thomson products are crap.
EDIT: ... but this is HHSB, so I suppose only aesthetics matter.
to be fair it was only their road stem that was a bit crap, and not that surprising coming from a previously purely MTB company
(oh and their elite stem crushing carbon forks bit that genuinely was user error)
