Does anyone have any experience of storing bikes on a sheltered Balcony in London? Any do's or don'ts?

I've had several mates have bikes stolen from balconies 2-3 stories up. I'd suggest you keep them locked to a fixed point and probably cover them with a tarp. Bike thieves are determined bastards.
