As suggested elsewhere churches with graveyards often have an outdoor tap.
LFGSS were out in force good to see,@hazzelfrazzel @luft @inappropriate_bike @seager @mustardbeak even if he didn’t recognise me with glasses and lid on.
Seemed like a good idea at the time to extend the Ditching Devil to get in an overnighter so I started just after 9pm on the route in reverse, aiming to back at Wimbledon for the start. Was still quite hot and luckily a pub at Shere, although technically closed at 11:15, topped up my water. There was nowhere to refill till a 24h services near Brighton. What do people do for water overnight when everywhere is closed?
The beginnings of twilight at the top of Ditching Beacon was a highlight. Got super sleepy at sunrise having started already a bit sleep deprived, and while waiting to find a grassy sunny spot to sleep nearly dozed off about 4 times. Was feeling rough with nausea too and almost already decided I wasn't going to finish the whole thing but rather see as the day unfolded. Got to the start just as the first lot where heading off. Felt better after cake and a coffee at the excellent Lu-Ma cafe. Train back from Brighton was a possible plan, so headed off again.
Was going well, but really didn't feel like going back through Surrey hills and already got what I wanted out of the ride. Plus, nice sunny day with good food and a beer in Brighton. Sorry I didn't get the 2 points for Team Audax LFGSS, but was a good ride anyway.
So many people for an audax, must be one of the biggest. Didn't see @inappropriate_bike or @GoatandTricycle, but was nice to see @Klar. I was very ready for a beer after sailing (tacking) up Ditching Beacon.
1.5x/10, would DNF again.
