don't buy anything with hope rims

i'd buy cheap rims from planet x (e.g. this), then build them up to hope/dt swiss/shimano hubs

Are there known issues with hope rims? Just weighing up buying 20/5 vs building up.

Yep, they're softer then they should be. Lots of dents in my experience and my friends and reportedly from MTB guides too. Get cheap WTBs on planet x or go for DT swiss which are lovely
