I found some relief from slugs by deploying a wide ring of friable material. The best was the seed husks of roasted pumpkin seeds, torn into smaller pieces. I found a couple of large snails and slugs,
'shipwrecked', their foot had an almost complete covering of the pieces of husk, and they could not move any further. The ring of material did require freqnet topping up, if it got wet from rain, and the birds that visit our garden seemd to enjoy turning it over, and leving the ring incomplete.Encouraging beetles, who predate slugs, is also recommended.

How does one encourage beetles. I would love to have some.

Anyone recommend me a decent strimmer for under £100?

Bit late to the party with this, but have recently tried saving up all my coffee grounds and spreading across the soil. Seems to be having the desired effect (along with some beer traps that are probably mainly rain by now)

Funnily enough I've been doing the same and seeing less of the buggers

I have a Black and Decker one which I picked up for under 100. Does the job. They're always on sale. I'll check the model number when I'm home.

Nothing else does it quite as well as slug pellets.
My slug electric fence does it pretty well!

I did not know that was a thing!

Finally starting to sort my garden out. Sure I'm making tons of mistakes but enjoying it, apart from the aforementioned slugs.

If you have slugs, those lupins won't last long.
Get a copper band around them sharpish!

Have you had success with copper bands? Reading mixed opinions

Apologies for a Daily Mail link but ....slugs

I planted that lavender for that very
reason! -

Copper bands seem to work, until it rains and the foliage bends down, over the band, making a slug bridge.
Nothing works.

Nothing works.
Starting to figure this out! My father in law gave me some pellets which I'm hesitant to use.
I was out with a torch last night looking for the buggers, couldn't find any. Massive trails and leaves munched this morning (over the coffee grounds I might add!)
Almighty rain forecast for the next couple of days too

Listen out for them at night. You will hear them scraping, then you can hunt them down.

I just found two heads (?) of wheat growing in one of my flower beds.
Colour me puzzled, until I noticed the bird feeder, full of seed, hanging off a tree above the bed. Ahhhh.

• #3270
That looks great!

Nothing works.
This does.

A stalk, or an ear stalk.

Ah yes of course. Thanks.

I’ve used nematodes very successfully for a couple of years.

You imagine you've used them, but they're already plotting to take over.
This pretty much echoes my experiences with slugs. Doesn't help that's there's been a monumental amount of rainfall over the last couple of weeks
