The Mallard. Went faster in 1938 than all trains on the network do today, with the exception of those which are run on High Speed 1 (Eurostar)
Fucking awesome engineering, pity we don't make shit like that anymore.
We do. We just have a set of visionless, useless greedy cunts in charge.

how fast did the mallard actually go?

I would like to go on the maglev in china - does 320mph I think.
I've always wanted to build a train set. Fixated with it since a child. Never had time or space as yet, though. I worry if I do it now, I will have nothing left for the reitirement. :)
Z gauge FTW. -

Sushi trains FTW.

Z gauge FTW.
Prohibitevly expensive. I have consider N Gauage - but if I do anything it will be in the 2mm scale, as in all standard gauges they are technically out of proportion.
I will probably do something like this:

If you shop around on the Bay then Z gauge prices arent too bad. My next door neighbour is well into OO and the prices seem comparable.

126.3 mph.

I like traveling on trains out of London but trains within London are useless, South Eastern trains for example must be run by a load of monkeys.
I hate South Eastern trains.

anyone with a love of trains should try the middlesbrough line. GNER. like something from Bugs Life, you know, with the tin can made into a train for bugs... but bigger.

Is you want a great train journey then you have to go on the Trans Siberian railway,a friend did it a few years ago, 8 days and loved Mongolia.
-
• #43
Mongolians can cook too.... Mongolian barbeque is great.

how fast did the mallard actually go?
What Platini said.
It then promptly broke down.
Good thing we don't have engineering like that any more ;)

I mean, who wouldn't want this thread bumped?
Do South Western Railway trains take Oyster card or do I need to buy a normal ticket for London->Twickenham?
-
• #46
TfL Journey Planner seemed happy with Twickenham as a destination.
-
• #47
Yep all good.

Ah, Paul-Michael’s legacy. So trains eh?

I’ve worked on the railways doing various contract commercial and infrastructure things for over 20 years. Meh.
5 years ago I took a job on a project to change the signals on East Coast Main Line from lights on sticks to in-cab digital wizardry and in that time I have become a full-on railway nerd. I flippin love it! We’re full into delivery now, putting the hardware in signal centre and on tracks, testing the software, training thousands of drivers, signallers, maintainers and support staff, we’re fitting hundreds of trains with kit including the entire national freight fleet and heritage locos including steam trains. We’re buying simulators and designing training courses and working out how to fit and run the old yellow plant that maintains the tracks. It’s amazingly immersive and touches almost every aspect of running a railway. If we get it right it’ll pave the way for how the railways work in the Uk, save billions and make train travel faster, safer, more reliable and far more sustainable. If we cock it up, we’ll end up in the daily Mail. Actually we’ll probably end up in the Mail either way.
Anyway. Trains. Yay. Here’s me and some work pals getting on a class 37 .
