  • Thanks all.

I'd read about water damage (it's meant to be partly waterproof and I can't recall getting it particularly wet) or impact (hasn't had an impact and odd that it started as horizontal lines and progressed from there after a good week or so).

I've tried Garmin email support twice now and pushed for any other option with no luck, so maybe I'll phone them as a last resort.

Was it recently that they sold you the refurb and were you out of warranty?

  • It was just over a year ago, and yeah it was well out of warranty

  • Anyone got an out front mount for an Edge Explore (same size as 1000/1030) that they don’t need any more?

  • Gave Garmin a call today. Explained the issue and was told again that the only option was £200 exchange for a refurbed unit.

Whatever I said they just came back to £200 for refurb exchange being the only option so reached a bit of a stalemate.

Politely asked if it was possible to speak to a manager to see if there were any other options. Was told that £200 refund was the only option and that is all the manager would offer.

Back and forth again but just repeated that I’d really appreciate checking with a manager in case there was anything they could do.

After a 5 min wait where he spoke to his manager he comes back on the phone to say that they will replace the unit as if it were in warranty.

Seemed a little more painful than needed.

  • Bitlocker.
    Garmin.
    Work computers.

How can i delete files off my devices if Bitlocker is saying "you need to encrypt this"?

  • You're better off trying to do it with your phone, I reckon - Work computers are likely to have group policies that make it impossible to write / delete on removable drives.

    Something like this maybe?

  • I've just discovered that someone has (at last) gone to the trouble of building a linux version of Garmin Express (which never worked over Wine / Mono, and needs a Windows VM to work).

    https://github.com/Tigge/antfs-cli

(You also need to have this compiled: https://github.com/Tigge/openant)

(And this, if you want to automatically upload to Garmin Connect: https://github.com/La0/garmin-uploader)

I can finally get rid of Windows!

  • And it's 10x faster than Garmin Express, connects straight away, and doesn't crap out half way.

    Noice.

  • Link no work but i'm guessing that's an OTG thing for a mobile?
    That's a sensible workaround!

  • Any reason to pick a Fenix 5 plus S over a forerunner 945?

  • Yes actually - do you still need one?

  • The 5x range looks nicer as a watch, I reckon.

Having had a 910x for the past many years, I'm looking forward to having a watch that I can wear daily, without feeling like a slevless.

Otherwise, there's nothing really in it, as far as I can tell.

  • Fenix 5 plus S

I need one too. Is there multi-buy discount available?

  • No, managed to pick one up last week. Thanks though!

  • ^^As far as I can see the 945 is all the Fenix Plus S blah blah is, for £200 less.

I think I shall defect from Fenix wearing to the 945 when it’s released unless someone comes up with a good reason not to.

  • Wrong thread, wrong comment.

    Nuke if needed.

  • What watch do I need to sync with Garmin swim hrm so its visible swimming. Laps useful. Not much else needed.

Gps could be good for tracking walks.

    Budget. No maps needed.

  • You can't see the data while you're in the water, as far as I remember.

The signal between HRM and unit attenuates to much, and can only work in air, where it batch transfers the numbers.

  • Ah ok. So no need for watch then. Just sync via 1000 after.

    Assuming it syncs with 1000.

  • Is the Garmin Fenix 5 a steal at £300? Or is that just the price of it.

I'm seeing one of those Amazon offers that says "save £180" but frankly that doesn't mean there's really a saving here.

I'm inclined towards getting a sports watch, but if there's a new one on the way that is driving price drops then I may as well wait for the price to fall more.

  • Well Keepa.com shows that is genuinely the lowest price they have sold it for since it launched (see here) .

However, I have no idea whether that's driven by the imminent launch of a replacement or not ...

  • Thanks.

I hovered over the checkout button a good 20 minutes but have bought it.

Have wanted one since it was released but in my head the price point for buying was £300 and lower... it's hit it, so sure, I'll get it.
