Pogliaghi commuter

  • Just collected this Pogliaghi after winning it on Ebay, and am planning using it as my commuter.
Im pretty sure it's a later Pogliaghi from when Basso made them, Columbus matrix tubing and couple of nice pantographs.

I had planned to just use as is with the 6 speed Shimano 600, but hadn't realised that the wheels were tubs. I'd rather clinchers for my daily ride so the I can easily fix a puncture. Money is a bit tight so trying to figure out the most economical way to get this ready.

As I see it, the choices before me now are:
    1) rebuild the wheels with some new rims (Kinlin ADHN or Ambrosio p20 etc.)
    2) try to sell the complete groupset on Ebay, cold set the frame and bring it more up to date with 9 or 10 speed

What would the LFGSS hive mind do?

  • (excuse the NDS photo - taken directly from the Ebay sales thread)

  • Nice frame! Maybe you can just buy a cheap secondhand 6s clinchers wheelset for now and start using it. In the meanwhile you can find out if you really like the bike and it will give you some time to save up money and find a nice more modern groupset

  • Or you could already buy a 8/9/10 speed wheelset and cassette you like and use the downtube shifter in friction mode and upgrade the rest later.

  • I'd like to see what rubbing the front fork with cola and aluminium foil does to the chrome.

  • Ah nice idea! I hadn’t really thought of that but it might be a good halfway house. I’ll ride it for a week as is to get a feel for it too

  • Awesome, thanks for mentioning that! I had no idea it would be so effective. Still a bit pitted but so so much better

  • Outstanding.

  • Cheapest option. Just give the tubs a whirl. They’re silky smooth and pretty puncture resistant. People seem to be terrified with using tubs these days but they’re great and easy to fix with sealant spray.
