  • Agree. Don't like people having dailys vs special either, if you can't stand to wear something every day though thick and thin, don't own it. Patina and use are as valuable as the metal that makes the cars and watches, IMO.

  • What if you really like a Patek but will never ever be able to afford it?

  • So you don’t have anything special? Shoes, good suit, good coat, good bike, special aftershave etc
I find that hard to believe but anything’s possible.

  • Should this style just be for the rich? And we common muck make do with a Seiko 5?

  • I think I covered this

  • Today’s lovely offerings , I have a client who wants to unload these and I don’t want to get involved as I am a bit up to my eyes in stock at the mo.
If anyone sees anything they fancy I can pass on etc.

  • Nope, everything I own is suitable for all environments and occasions

  • @freddo

Some people might look at their fake watch and beam at all the money they saved for almost the equivalent product? Some people might feel like an asshat wearing thousands of £s on their wrist?

  • This guy off Reddit is good

  • Well, I feel that’s unusual. I have a Speedmaster which I won’t wear to work. Chance of loss and damage is too high. It is my good watch. I do wear it as much as I can. I have just cut my grass - I could have worn it but I don’t think it’s an appropriate watch to wear doing that. I will wear it later.

  • Give it a wipe if it gets a bit of grass on it

  • Lol. I’ll maybe wear it next time. Next job today is car washing - watchless.

  • Seiko Friday!

  • I agree with @freddo and appreciate the game theory reference.

  • I still want one to get one of these, love them.

  • Friends don't let friends buy fake watches :)

If you wouldn't pay £500 for that watch without the Patek branding then it's a fake and you are throwing your money away. Save that money for the day you can buy an honest watch that speaks to you. If you posted the same watch with no branding for £200 I'd say it was a decent proposition.

It doesn't bother me that people are wearing fake subs, doesn't eat into my enjoyment of my own watch.

  • I find this fakes chat interesting because I own a few "homage" watches. None have any branding, I wouldn't go that far, but even if I could afford a AP Royal Oak I'd be terrified of dropping it or falling off my bike while wearing it. And they're decent mechanical watches, it's not like they don't do the job of telling the time.

  • Still in love with this one. Managed to wear the Sub last night, it's a better watch but the dial on the speedy just floats my boat. It's also a very subtle watch despite the extra thickness. I could go on about this watch all day!!

I don't own any fakes, and not sure I'd bother. But I'm not sure there's that many who'd buy a £50k Patek without the branding on it either i.e. just for the sake of the object.

I own a pair of (low end) Omegas, and like them as objects, but I'm sure that the branding is part of that. I'd wear a fake branded one and doubt I'd feel any different about it.
I think the only argument with merit about the fakes is that it's probably unethical to support the fake market and that IP is infringed. Anything else about 'feel' and 'not exact matches' etc doesn't really work for me - appreciate people own and collect for different reasons etc.

  • And all for less than the price of a “good” fake Rolex!

  • IMHO if you're into luxury watches, you're a bit of an asshat... I'm a bit of an asshat but fortunately I'm also too tight to play that high end watch game... Fakes are shit but a lot of people get a lot of pleasure out of wearing moody luxury man bracelets... Is that person's enjoyment any less than that of a person who is wearing a lovely OG 60s Sub? Um, probably not... They don't care...

Authenticity will only matter to that person who is desperate to attain the cache that comes from owning that bauble... It's just another way that humans choose to set themselves apart from other humans... Status, status and status... Meaningless... I have a similar problem with vintage guitars... Bikes are cheap, so that's ok...

    Nice watches, boring people...

    Not you lot, obvs...

  • I don't really have an issue with people buying fakes - whatever gets you going but I think the industry you'd be supporting is questionable - whilst high end Swiss watch makers are hardly chomping at the bit to save the world they do give back to the economy in a broad sense. The fake market is just pretty murky.

  • Ok I have lost the link but I believe this homage will tick everyone's boxes.

    From both sides.

    (I will get one)

    B^P

  • It’s a good point but firstly, I don’t think anyone buys a luxury watch and regularly feels like an asshat for having £thousands on their wrist. Occasionally I might have worn a watch that made me feel guilty about it’s value but these are extreme situations. The far more likely situation I see is the opposite, people buy fakes and feel routinely smug that they didn’t spend thousands. It just shows that some people don’t have any actual consideration for that brand, in which case my question is the same as to @Velocio previously: why not buy an homage?
