  • Here's an article about the tremendous market potential of these lab-grown 'meats'.

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/jun/12/most-meat-in-2040-will-not-come-from-slaughtered-animals-report

As I've said before, I don't think a global oligopoly, which is what will happen if these early investment trends are going to continue, is necessarily a desirable state of affairs.

  • Controversial I'm sure but KFC are trialling a new vegan burger in London from 17th June.

  • Much as I'd love to try it, would I be right in guessing that KFC kill more animals than any other food outlet on the planet?

  • The burger is served with vegan mayonnaise, fresh iceberg lettuce and a soft-glazed bun.

    From the article.

  • I won't be trying it. I'm sure it's good they're doing it, but theirs is still a disgusting business that I won't support.

(It's the old argument again of 'do you change things from the outside (e.g., by boycotting certain businesses until they change, or from the inside, by buying their vegan stuff but not their other stuff?' I sometimes do the latter, but I draw the line at companies like KFC or McDonald's.)

  • Skim read, didn't see that.

Still won't be setting foot in that place. Walking past it makes me feel sick, I can't imagine going in even if its to buy non-meat

  • I'm all for buying vegan products from non vegan companies. I think it does good, shows them that there is profit to be made in it and begins a shift toward less meat, more vegan. Afterall, they don't care about the killing of animals, only profit.
But KFC can go fuck themselves.

  • I draw the line at companies like KFC or McDonald's.

Agreed, though have been intrigued to see Peta recommend the Burger King Beanburger (sans mayo and cheese) on its website. Guess it's good to have an option if you're the only vegan in a family that wants to share a Bargain Bucket.

  • This is absolutely my view in general.

I frequently buy Itsu's vegan offerings, which are great. But KFC/Subway/BK, even, dare I say it, Greggs just feels like a marketing fig leaf over some pretty appalling supply chains.

  • Yup. Totally get it. A bit like horrible companies painting rainbows on things for pride month..

But.. Of all the things I miss after being veggie then vegan for 14 years zinger tower burger is top of the list.

    I'm a horrible person. Haha.

  • You monster.

Nah, maccies chicken selects were my guilty pleasure. I get you.

horrible companies painting rainbows on things for pride month..

Yeah I don't get this. They make and sell a product. Just saying "we support you" means what exactly? You're a profit making machine, you shouldn't have views at all, you should be for equality to all as default.

But that's a conversation for another time I suspect.

  • I think the KFC burger will attract the scene vegans... I've seen countless comments on Instagram on vegan threads about the new McDonalds burger etc and a lot of people are freaking out about it... it's a fuckin joke... if you've got an ounce of compassion... like I'm thinking a lot of us on here have... we wouldn't even dream about even stepping into KFC/McDonalds net alone buying their food.

  • McDonalds

i did have a pee in here at the weekend. dont judge me.

  • Just saying "we support you" means what exactly?

It's advertising, of course (not that you don't know that). They tell a group with which its members identify very strongly that they 'support' them so that people associate their product with their group. I'm sure it works.

  • Yeah I don't get this. They make and sell a product. Just saying "we support you" means what exactly? You're a profit making machine, you shouldn't have views at all, you should be for equality to all as default.

..you're overthinking this. They like your money, whatever the fuck your view on whatever is.

  • PETA is pretty much Inconsistencies'R'Us.

  • Yeah for sure. I can only empathise since I'm not a part of the LGBT community to know for myself, but unless a company said they were against my sexuality or views, I would assume they're fine supplying me with their product despite mine so their virtue signalling advertisement means very little but maybe it works for them more than I imagine it would.

Edit: Yeah Tina I get you, I just don't know how it makes them any extra money but

maybe it works for them more than I imagine it would.

  • In the absence of a public convenience have used their WC at Ealing Broadway.
    Sorrynotsorry.

  • Already judged... you should've kept quiet!

  • I probably wouldn't give KFC my money personally. Having said that, making veganism more accessible and helping to reduce the image it has of being elitist or exclusive or unaffordable etc can only be a positive thing in my opinion!

  • Agreed. I’ve got friends who recently went vegan who say having lots of “mainstream” alternatives has actually really helped them.

Also helps move away from the stereotype that all vegan food is lentils and houmous and groups of hippies round a fire. Giving money to large corporations is shite, but making it more accessible can only be a good thing in my opinion.

  • Scandal-hit patisserie chain stops using dairy butter in puff pastry.

    https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/jun/16/cash-starved-patisserie-valerie-stopped-using-butter-in-puff-pastry

    What's the problem? :)

  • The problem might be not telling vegans they can now eat your croissants - we could've saved them. Look how quick we've been to embrace any old high street provider who'll throw us a bone (but obviously not a real bone).

  • Pffft, if it's not a real vegan bone, I'm not interested.
