  • Hello peeps - Is anyone hitting Record Store Day? and could perhaps pick up a couple of things for me? Ideally Peckham Soul as its local and can easily sort pick up after. Am visiting my Dad so can’t get there :/

  • Didn't grab anything today, didn't see anything that grabbed me tho' I'm sure I've missed a gem I can't live without...

My latest purchases have been an original UK issue of Psychedelic Jungle by The Cramps, looks perfect but a bit noisy, hmm... I've never owned it for some reason and missed a lovely cheap copy in my local Oxfam just before leaving the UK... Also picked up the new Surfbort single which came out last month, fucking brilliant band... Three old guys and a young woman making beautiful punk rock...

When do I actually get to grow out of this rock'n'roll stuff?

  • My RSD stuff was delivered this week from the distro. Only thing I had picked out was a 7" Just A Star - Smiles/Astronauts, got a couple of copies. I've not been caught up in the hype this year.

Otherwise had a load of titles through the door and went to a record fair in Wimbledon last week for a few 2nd hand.

One new release I liked from Australia :- Tiana Khasi - Meghalaya

    & some dub

The Last Poets - Understand What Dub Is
Mad Professor - Electro Dubclubbing !!

    UK based HipHop (kind of)

Onoe Caponoe - Surf Or Die

The new Ruby Rushton - Ironside & DMX Krew - Glad To Be Sad

  • Cross posting this from the RSD thread...

Anyone going to any of these stores today - Rough Trade, All ages, Eel Pie Records, World.of Echo, Stranger than Paradise?

I’m after a copy of the Crass Flexi disc (it’s free). None of the shops have it where I am (York).

  • Ah! I wondered if there were any Surfbort fans here. I love this track

  • They came out here before Christmas with the Sniffers and totally stole my heart, love them!!! I follow all four of them on IG, bit of a sad case... 😂

  • I heard of them from following David Head on iG and seeing him posting stuff about his band.

  • I didn't know anything about him before hearing the band, I chatted to him when they were here and he was lovely... The whole band were actually... They're pretty interesting people, OG Brooklyn artist types...

  • Juno are pretty good at quick delivery

19 mins between order confirmation & despatch emails today!

  • Managed to get a copy of the Crass flexi today as the record shop had some still.

For some reason they didn’t have any of the inserts left as they had been given them out separately yesterday. Makes no sense.

  • I have a spare Pro S cartridge if you got nowhere, would sell fairly cheap?

  • Moved

  • Quiet in here...

Is there a recommended carbon brush?

  • We're all busy enjoying our records :)

They are all pretty similar and the more you look into it the less they are liked. I have some and don't really use them anymore but I do use a vacuum cleaner. My own experience of them is similar to most people, it's difficult to remove all the debris with them so you end up with a bunch of dust that you are pushing around the record until you lift the brush and it stays in a line. I guess you could just snort it off with a straw then!!

  • I like to think that they are good for destatifying (what's the right word?) new records.

  • Really? I get arseloads of static when I use it on the deck. I don’t bother. The odd wipe with a cloth.

  • I have no way to test/proof it so to be honest it's probably pure placebo.

  • Static is one thing that the vacuum cleaner sorts right out, due to the water.

I'd never noticed the brush making a difference. There is an argument about technique where you move the brush towards the centre post on the deck until it touches it which is supposed to make it pick up the remaining debris due to earthing the brush. There's a video out there somewhere.

For static a lot of people like the anti-static guns. There's also the spin clean which is a manual liquid based cleaner.

  • Popped into a Greenwich record shop selling reissues and second hand and the price of mediocre reissues is genuinely unbelievable.

  • There is no point in buying mediocre vinyl if you can avoid it. Better off spending £70 for a VG+ original of a great album than three crap copies of a 90's runner up.

  • I used to get the dust line with the velvet brush (pad type) I had. I was hoping a carbon brush would attract the dust somehow, and by going clockwise toward the centre it would at least displace towards the label. The vacuum is not really an option here, I can't imaging getting it out every time I am playing a record, and what I'm after it's a quick solution for the dust before the record is played, not a deep clean.
A slightly damp microfibre cloth is efficient, but am I right thinking there shouldn't be any moisture touching the stylus?

  • Any hip hop heads here?

I unearthed my teenage record collection recently — 60 ish records have been sitting in a flight case in the attic for the past 14 years.

Will probably just sell locally (Portsmouth) as a job lot for ease but on the off chance anyone here is interested in anything in particular, here’s a link, there’s a list in the album at the end.

  • Doesn't make a huge difference but you have loads of things to consider with stylus and record wear. Wear is inevitable. If you are playing new records and they are a little damp it won't make much difference (try to use purified water though). With old records you run the risk of making a slurry of old dirt which you then drag round the grooves with the stylus, then the stylus gets worn and starts damaging other records. Bear in mind that slurry includes remnants of old stylus.

I get that you don't want a vacuum cleaner. There are times when I don't want all the stuff I have either :) They do make having a big record collection a bit more bearable though.

  • Thanks for the tip(s). Old records are usually cleaned at time of purchase (nothing fancy, soap and water), I'll make sure I don't skip that bit.
