I always find that tough to recommend because there are so many technical details to take into account depending on the electronic and physical design of the amp. Ultimately though it's probably best practice.
A pot is just a variable resistor. A log10K or log50K, etc, etc is the same component it's just that some pots are better and more reliable than others.
It's more to do with the available space for mounting, length of shaft, shaft pattern to match the existing knob, connection type. Maybe I'm overthinking it but any time I've gone looking for a volume pot it's been quite a lot of work.
