• I've just looked at this article and I think it's worth commenting that I understand 'ngcc' to refer to the clearance on the crank and chainring, rather than the chainline to the rear sprocket(s).

    Naturally, the length of the spindle will affect the chainline, but as we now know after decades of derailleur use, this is not quite so critical as our forefathers used to assert. In any case, if you use a long spindle, how are you supposed to get the rear sprocket farther to the right?

  • Oh good. It is weirdly long. Just measured and it’s like 140mm! Came off a bike with a five spd block but now you mention, it was a double c/s. Should have thought about this before fitting the thing. Right, thank you, off to find something more appropriate.

  • I will solve all this (ha! And likely create another problem) tomorrow with the collection of a second hand BW 120mm bb.
