• Hmm. Advice sought please. Have I fitted the axle in the wrong way around here?
    Thought the longer end should be on the drive side, but having offered up the chainset, it seems like I might be wrong. Loathed to take the bb out again, but needs to be correct!

  • You're correct in thinking the longer end of the spindle should be on the drive side.
    Presumably you're trying to fit that C34 chainset, and I guess your query arises from the excessive clearance you've got between the chainset and the frame.

    The spindle you have there looks as though it's the longest possible - I don't know what it was intended for, but I'd guess it's for something like triple rings with a full chaincase (although such a thing surely never existed!). On the other hand your C34 is about as compact as you can get, so it's a bad combination.

    In a nutshell, I think you need a shorter spindle to achieve a decent chainline.
