  • Kinesis 4S disc in 60cm looks like a candidate with 402.7 reach, 606.4 stack

Talk of an 'OG winter bike' has me thinking I should look for second hand on here

@duncs I don't want raceblades, I want the best guards I can get on this

  • Bowman Pilgrims disc? It's much more of road bike than a Checkpoint, and you can fit proper mudguards.

  • Yes! I think that's the one. I had assumed it was much more expensive for some reason, must have been thinking of Mason

  • I've got a 58cm Pilgrims Disc I'm contemplating selling on, but maybe a little undersized for you.

  • Will the Sunrace MS8 Wide-Ratio Cassette require a spacer on a road bike hub?
If so am I better off with the SunRace CSRX1?

  • That looks class @6pt, I have a bit of room to go longer on the stem, so I am potentially interested, I'll PM you

  • Ahh, not much good then sorry!

  • A friend built a frame like this using steel plate to form a one-sided yoke of sorts (possibly there is a better phrase). It seems to work fine.

  • Is there a footwear thread?
I'm looking into sandals and can't decide between Birkenstock and Teva sandals for the summer, off-the-bike or mild touring.

  • Google fails me - how to adjust a Campagnolo Nuovo Record brake and what size tool do I need for this nut? (yellow arrow).

  • I have some birkenstock single strap things. They are marked as 43 and fit like 45’s. Oversized as they are, they are quite comfortable. I found the main issue being sand getting under the strap really adhered to the leather and cut the hell out of my feet. Maybe just me though. Otherwise super comfortable.

  • First time I wore Birkenstock’s I took them as my only footwear for a weekend break to Barcelona. After an hour or so I was in agony but we carried on walking around, I was rendered unable to walk after 4 hours and had to hobble back to the hotel. The arch support had strained muscles in my feet and the straps rubbed me raw. Plus I managed to get sunburn on the tops of my feet.

However since that day I have found them to be amazingly comfy and am onto my third pair in about 15 years.

  • that is a mixed review :D

  • Definitely Teva

  • DJ has Birkenstocks so get the other ones

  • Birkenstocks are great in general, if your feet are 'made' for them - some people struggle with their shape though. I commuted in Birkenstocks for quite a while, so that definitely works. However, it's worth noting they don't cope with water so well.

  • Thanks, still assessing how much I want to replace the shopper which works fine but is too small and a little wobbly due to design and tubing limitations, it rides really comfortably though.

  • Any way to respace a 130mm spaced disc wheel with Dura Ace Hyperglide hub to 126mm?

  • However, it's worth noting they don't cope with water so well.

That's what the EVA range is for. I love mine.

  • If you have the tyre space for it, you can take 4mm of spacing out of the NDS and accept that your bike will be 2mm out of track. Remember, the original single-sided Burrows/Lotus was 20mm out of track because it was easier to live with that than to try to correct it by changing the shape of the frame.

  • Thank you. Will take a punt on the wheel.

  • It’s so annoying when sandals fill up with water!

    ;-)

  • The classic cycling engineering science texts are Archibald Sharp's Bicycles and Tricycles, and Whitt and Wilson's Bicycling Science (both published by MIT press, though as a century-old text the Sharp may have other reprint editions). Both interesting in their own right, will give you pointers for further areas of study, and more likely to sustain interest than a standard engineering statics/mechanics textbook.

  • Haha, the problem isn't that they fill up of course, but the leather can get pretty ruined if they get properly wet a few times. Also the footbed can get slippy as fuck while it's raining. So you're pedalling along and you can literally slip off to one side...
