I always figure a decent watch service is about a day's work including calibrating the movement so that is pretty cheap for a stripdown service. Good negotiating skills though!

No negotiation necessary. That's just what they charged. As I say though, I tend to spend a few grand with them each year and I always send people their way so perhaps not a price they'd normally offer now I think of it.

Speaking of Alsal, finally popped in to collect the two watches they restored for me. Both low value but both with huge sentimental value.
I stupidly didn't take photos before I dropped them off. Suffice it to say, both had spent 10+ years in a box during which time the room they were kept in was flooded. The Seiko didn't have any direct water ingress but was totally seized and utterly filthy inside. The Omega had water ingress, the lacuquer on the dial and hands had lifted up and corroded underneath and was not ticking.
Seiko just needed a thorough clean inside and out. The Omega needed a dial restoration and a new Omega 1375 movement which proved to be a bit of a bitch to find without sacrificing another watch.

Anybody seen the fixie hipster brakeless descent video on Tudors instagram ?
Made my fucking morning. -

I know that Quartz isn't popular on this thread but I had a look at one of the Bulova moonwatches in Alsal and I'm a little smitten with it. Well worth a look if you get a chance.

Hmm, gilt dial, red bezel and black jacquard strap combo is actually really nice there. Shame about the thickness / Arial issues.
-
• #35562
Does my one have Arial issues too? Do you mean the bezel numbers?

Nothing wrong with the bezel, but the dial text is in Arial on most modern Tudors. Yours included (though the actual layout of the text on the smiley dials is a lot better than the current ones).

Thanks. In some ways I wish I could identify fonts by sight. Although probably better that I can't.

It’s a minuscule detail. Your watch is very nice. :)

• #35566
I see nothing wrong with your font...
.... Damn design pedants....

I thin it just because default in word processing. If it was Helvetica the hipsters would have chub.

• #35568
Somebody has to be a font snob otherwise everything would look shit. I'm just glad its not me. It must be torture.
-
• #35569
Helvetica can do one as well.

Pretty much. I can’t un-see the hyphen in SELF-WINDING. They haven’t changed the (poor) default spacing so it’s ended up closer to the W than the F. They also haven’t corrected the alignment for capital letters, i.e. it’s sitting too low because by default it’s aligned for lower-case letters.
It’s a waking nightmare, honestly.

Every written word can inflict limitless torture it’s tru

Having handled that irl I can say that I had no idea it was that vintage. It is in lovely condition.
-
• #35574
I know, right? It took me literally years of looking to find one in this good condition and even then I’m selling it at a loss 🤔

Check how sharp this case is - again, this is unpolished, as it came out of the factory.

I like it, how much?? But I'm also in Aus and just had to buy a new car. Watch budget low.
check for radium, particularly on the hands. Not ideal as a daily wearer if so IMO
