I use Vittoria Revolutions on my Surly 1x1 and they’re good for road and gravel but I reckon they’d get a bit out of their depth in any mud.
I’d go for some Maxxis Crossmarks (or modern equivalent) for a compromise between on and off road, or something like a Kenda Smallblock 8?
EDIT: @vilms5000 has just listed a pair of Ikons (which I think are the updated Crossmarks - a lot of the Tour Divide guys and gals run them) for £20. Bit of a bargain, I'd have snapped them up if I was in Ldn!
