  • Please someone send to Titania for a verdict.

  • I didn't realise there was a mens version. The previously quoted blurb from the red bull website seemed to suggest it was a female only event and it always seems to be the women's event I see being bandied about on social meedja.

I still find the link to a blood sport distasteful but I guess that's not a discussion for this thread.

  • While I think that some of this shows people having too much energy to distract themselves from caring about real problems, the bizarre 'controversy' about female body hair is certainly interesting in being symptomatic of sexist attitudes:

    https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/apr/29/female-armpit-hair-outrage-disgust-nike-ad

Just let people wear/trim/whatever their hair how they want. It couldn't really be simpler.

  • This article I find a bit odd--it may well be the case in many places that images of female bodies are missing, but every biology book I've ever seen had images of both male and female bodies in it:

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/apr/26/women-anatomy-body-default-female-male

  • Just let people wear/trim/whatever their hair how they want. It couldn't really be simpler.

Absolutely. But if they are going to let it grow, they should at least have the decency to mention it on their Tinder profile.

  • I saw that headline and presumed it was total clickbait. Perhaps b/c I can't really be bothered to spend time trying to get in to the mind of someone who is actually outraged by female body hair ....

  • Is it sexist of me to take umbrage with a local cycling charity having a woman’s and non-binary workshop evening called ‘Spokes Not Blokes’?

To be clear, I’m not against there being an evening set aside for people of these genders. I totally understand the need for a time/space where women and non binary people can feel safe, welcome and free from being judged, especially in a male dominated context like cycling but it just seems very strange to me that you’d try to do something about INclusivity of certain genders by being so EXclusive of another.

I think it’s actually the word ‘bloke’ and the insinuation that it makes that irks me the most. I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘bloke’ as I’d associate the word with what could be described as the traits of toxic masculinity (so I’d consider it a derogatory term) yet by the wording of the session descriptor on the charities website I wouldn’t be welcome (and neither should I be) at the session, therefor, just because I’m a straight male, I must be a ‘bloke’.

  • Calm down sugar tits, it just rhymes.

  • So does “Gears not Queers”, doesn’t mean it should be a thing.

  • woke bloke

    #amidoingitright?

  • edit: life too short

  • I mean, that's using an historically derogatory term to exclude a minority group, so isn't really the same. You might not think of yourself as a bloke, but it's not really a derogatory term so I wouldn't get your panties in a bunch.

  • Derailleurs not Failurez

  • I mean, that's using an historically derogatory term to exclude a minority group, so isn't really the same.

I know it’s not the same, just seems a strange choice for a group that have historically been excluded to now be using a title which promotes the exclusion of men rather than going for something that focuses on INclusion.

As for whether or not it’s derogatory, I think given the context, it’s fair to assume it wasn’t being used as a term of endearment.

However I am aware that what may or may not be derogatory to straight males is never going to be a popular topic for conversation.

  • I guess a better way of putting it might be that the title “Spokes not Blokes” would appear to perpetuate the culture of division and negativity between genders where a title that focused on who was included/welcome at the session would put out a more positive message.

  • Don't you think they're naming it with a touch of irony? It's a sport/activity in your area that's dominated by [straight white] men. The reality is that if you showed up, you'd be welcomed anyway.

  • All lives matter

  • Don't you think they're naming it with a touch of irony?

So tarring a whole gender with the same brush is ok because it’s ironic? Or because it’s men and ironic?

  • tarring

    Mmm, nevermind

  • My cycling club has a ‘ladies’ card, rides etc. I did the design of the id and pink was requested. It’s a shame it exists (I’d rather the ‘ladies’ felt totally happy mixing) but it’s all good.

  • It just doesn’t really matter.

  • Is it sexist of me to take umbrage with a local cycling charity having a woman’s and non-binary workshop evening called ‘Spokes Not Blokes’?

Nope, seemed fair, you literally just did a #notallmen

  • Bloody tall men.
