Any issues with smell or mould? How long have you had it for?
-
• #17453
Infrared like the cobra from speedheater.

• #17454
Not that I've noticed although i can't really get down there to check. Probably 3-4 years or so?

What kind of cost are you looking at for a "hobby" version of one of those or is it a case that the cheaper ones just don't do the job that well. I've got a fair few window frames with god knows how many coats of paint on them where it would be useful but I wouldn't be able to justify the £300 or so given it's a one-off job.
-
• #17458
There is a guy selling his own version for £25 on eBay....thinking I might give it a punt as like you say £300 is a little rich and can't find anywhere that hires them
-
• #17459
If on a budget Id just use a blowtorch (gently!) and a scraper
-
• #17460
My issue is lead paint, so high heat is a no no
-
• #17461
The ceramic version is less effective but you might be fine with it taking a little more time. Otherwise lots of PPE and careful with the dust and you can use a tungsten scraper blade quite effectively. If you have small children or pets around you need to be extra careful with the dust even with an ir stripper.
One or 2 people on this thread have followed the advice and bought one for slightly larger jobs, no one has been disappointed. I get that it's expensive for just one window though.

Late to this, but that must be the best action man zip-wire evar!

If you were doing it 8 hours every day 6 days a week then maybe burning off lead paint would be an issue. One window in the entirety of your life, with plenty of ventilation? You’ll be fine.
Probably nothing compared with cycling through central London in the 1980s pre unleaded petrol. -

I'm having my fusebox and meter moved so they're more out of the way. What should I put on the wall for these to be mounted to? Just some MDF or something more substantial?
-
• #17465
plywood would be better, also a good idea to space of the wall on a couple of battens to allow the cables to enter to the rear of the box

Are ikea kitchens shit?
The carcases are as good as any other. You can pimp the doors up with other companies products.
The space behind is solved by pulling them out and putting a deeper worktop on.
Agree, did exactly this in our old house. Hinges, shelves etc were fine for the 10 years we used the kitchen. We may just have been lucky but oth IKEA can't really afford to make shit kitchens, according to my architect friend.

18mm osb or ply is what I normally see. Damp is a problem for MDF and consumer units are not always but often in dark cupboards where damp could be an issue.
Just saw pryally's answer, which covers it and adds the thing I forgot to mention. :)

Ok. About the meter.
How far are you moving it? Anything less than 1 metre you need to talk to the supplier.
Anything over you need to talk to the distributor.
An electrian can move the distribution board but can't touch meters as they don't belong to you.
-
• #17469
thats good to hear! thanks
-
• #17470
I'm not moving it, my electricity supplier is, less than a meter, and installing an isolator, so my electrician can install the new up to date (with surge protection) fuesboard safely.
I am also having the main fuse/electricity supply made safe by UK Power Networks, as the one I currently have, is massive, and covered with gaffa tape.
But I am having a wonderful time trying to organise these 3 different contractors to complete their various works in the most sensible order. I thought maybe if I could get the board installed on the wall, it would save a bit of time.

Thanks man. Will do. Cables are coming down from the ceiling into the top, so I think it can be mounted flat.
-
• #17472
If the supplier is moving the meter it then its up to them to mount it properly.
The electrian should be mounting the distribution board properly. It's not up to you to supply wood.

Are you living in a high lighting strike area?
