  • I've got the Paddington express 400k tomorrow. Been looking forward to this all year!

  • What are you riding? I’ll be on a green stayer and hopefully with a forum jersey.

  • Fixed purple Bob Jackson w/ Carradice bagman/audax bag.

  • Were you on Peacocks and Kites?

  • How can I kill 3hrs in Bristol with a bike that I don't fancy leaving locked up?

  • Good luck to those doing the BCM!

  • Thanks, that is in the general direction I'm heading anyway.

  • I was on Dauntsey Dawdle 400 this morning, saw loads of riders from Paddington Express going the other way near Maidenhead bit of a mind fuck at first, unusual to see anyone at 5am let alone a load of other audaxers going in the other direction!

Hope it's going well for everyone!

  • I was wondering who's ride that was.

  • Finished BCM in 31hrs on 90mins sleep. Feeling fucked now.

  • Aha, I was wondering what the event was (I was riding the Express). My initial reaction was ‘oh fuck I’m going the wrong way’, had to double check my route a few times to be sure...

I wasn’t properly prepared for the freezing fog, was shivering by the time I got to the McDonald’s control. The manager was cracking down on people napping too so I ended up doing the rest of it on 5 minutes of sleep.

  • Got to Kings at 10pm and had 6 hours sleep amazingly, finished at 32hrs as hotel checkin opened at 2.

Now I know what I'm dealing with I'd probably just hire a car and drive back next time so I'm not tied to time! Or bounce Kings like you guys did potentially.

  • I'm not doing another one. 3 is my limit.

  • I said that about Greenwich Mean Climb and I still gleefully enter it every year even though it's mostly horrible.

  • I have just booked into Maidenhead's Travelodge for the Friday pre-Windsor Chester Windsor. Kind of dreading it tbh, I have done a 600 before but it was flat and I am shit at hills and I am pretty convinced I'm gonna have brain failure and not be able to do it, or I'll be so slow that I won't get any time for sleep.

    Fucking audax, eh? Silly PBP.

  • If you've got lower gears, fit them. Then it's just eating, drinking, pacing, you'll be fine.

I keep getting emails from 600s. I'm like "shit, I haven't even looked at the route of the first one yet and now I have another two to worry about" and I'm not even doing PBP :S

  • :D

32 at the back, 34 at the front; can get up everything without too much bother but generally over long distances, hills slow me down. At my LWL pace, I might have time for 3 hours of sleep, maybe more if I factor in the fact that the cold slowed me down rather than anything else. My brain just loves to be anxious about anything, when I put the facts in front of me it looks like I will probably be absolutely fine.

  • That's not low gears... these are low gears...

To be fair, this is for my ultra racing not audaxing but it'll certainly help if I actually make it to the start of the Pendle 600.

3hrs sleep is plenty if you're 'only' riding for two days.

    Shower? >>>
    Splashing water on face ftw

  • I've booked a cheap room near the start of Ben Allen Tour for this Friday because 1) I didn't know a hall would be available when I booked it and 2) I want to get some good sleep to give myself the best chance of finishing these rides without too much hard work / suffering so I can back it up 4 weeks in a row and then get to TransPyrenees without being totally ruined.

Drop me your recovery tips peeps!

  • There's very different versions of "rest" though.
